INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

First off I want to give my condolences to Seabrights mom. She had a fire today in one of her coops and lost around 50 chickens. She had chicks in there and her sons show chickens. So please everyone keep her in your prayers. She is really upset right now. I feel so bad for her because there is nothing she could of done for them. She believes her heat lamp that was keeping chicks warm started it. Everyone please go out to your coops and brooders and take extra precautions on where your heat lamps are and make sure they are secure and wont get knocked down! I myself went to my brooder thats in my barn and made sure it was secure and it wasnt as much as i liked it so i secured it more. Also make sure your heat lamp or anything that is electric does not have a short in it to cause a fire. If you have a facebook page please go to her farms page and leave your condolences. We are all like family on here and Im sure we all care about each other. Thanks.

Quote: Since I have a small flock I keep mine right on the kitchen counter in that 2 gal glass crock you see in the articles. Lots of people put theirs in the plactic buckets with the snap-on lids like you can get from the bakery dept. As long as you can keep a lid on it it's okay. Others keep theirs right in the barn or coop but I like the convenience of having it inside. If I went to the bigger bucket I think I'd still try to figure out a way to keep it inside because I want it to be easy!

Animallover -this is my baby rooster. Below is his sister. I think these are 9 weeks old. Look at the difference at the YOUNG age.

I use a 5 gallon buckets for my flock. I put a lid on it but I dont snap it down because it needs air. When i first started it kinda stunk for a bit but after little time it started smelling like light yeast bread. I keep mine inside the house in my laundry room. It doesnt even smell up the house. You can only smell it when you are next to it and take off the lid.

PS on the fermented feed - it really cuts down on the amount of feed after they get used to it. It seems that they get way more nutrition out of less which is an added bonus for the pocketbook!
