Sorry to hear about your loss, can not imagine the feelings you must be going through. You have some wonderful friends on here who will help you through it and help you rebuild. Many hugs.


Brad - Those chicks are just adorable, the Polish are too cute.

AATH - Can not think of anywhere local to get new birds. Orchelns in Greenfield might have some, best to ring first. Although at some point if ever you decide to go the hatchery route, let me know. I am after some Porcelain D'uccle's and some Marans. Maybe we could split and order. Might be able to snag yourself some rares then.

Leah's Mom - What kind of feed can use use for the fermenting? I currently feed good old layer crumbles and cracked corn (as well as a table scrap assortment). What kind of feed would you be using?

Have I missed something out.. I am sure I have...

Just one more thing to rant about.

.. this may be ignorned, but I felt the need to share.

So we have 8" of snow it is still snowing and my sons school does not even have a delay. They drive me crazy!
The only delay the school has ever had was the ice storm a few months ago, even then it was a one hour delay.

With no bus service we all drive our kids to school, is it so unreasonable to ask for a delay! Heck most of the darn school in this area are closed.

I wanted to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers. It is hard to loose some many beautiful birds but I do have over 120 eggs in the incubator. I just hope they hatch. We will be working on building new brooders that won't use heat lamps. SO I would love any new ideas. The sad part is that the heat lamp the caused the fire was just put up yesterday morning 2 hours before the fire. So It was a quick fire. My husband was first to the fire and tried to save them. I even tried but couldn't. It was a sad day. The good news is that all my other birds were away from the fire and are fine along with the rest of my animals. My son's show birds were in there but he will still be able to show birds out of the breeding pens. I look forward to raising some chicks, ducklings, and turkeys this spring. I did loose several chicks and chickens in the fire that can't be replace through our own birds, but I should be able to get hatching eggs to replace most of them.


Thanks again everyone. I am grateful to know that I have so many wonderful people that would be willing to help myself and my family out. I am truly blessed.

Wow it's only been a couple weeks since I've been on here and I had 1800 replies on this forum I missed wow. Been busy studying to take my nursing boards which means no life! Anyone else having problems with hawks... Been letting the girls freerange and looked out the window to see one of my girls pinned to the ground. I ran outside barefoot in my PJ's screaming like a crazy lady. She's just a little bloody and might have an injury to one eye, but alive. Debating getting a rooster (looking through the re-homing forum for something local). We will have a enclosed run for when we aren't home but we have a small home orchard and wanted the chickens to control the bug population. ugggg darn federal laws protecting these dang things. thinking a rooster is the next best thing.

Can anyone age these girls? Also are they ready to be placed in a cold garage with their heat lamp? They are in a room right now and are panting so i think it's getting too hot. And one last question how warm should they be at this age? Thanks!!

Anyone have rare breed chicks around the Indianapolis area that they want to sell? I have two right now but want a few more. TSC only sells six min and I don't want that many. Plus I want some rare breeds.

ChknBrdr plans to be at the swap in Martinsville this Saturday. He pretty much specializes in rare breeds, or at least that used to be his focus.

what a wounderful spring break im having.... not... i woke up to the chickens run top (useing a tent for now) had collased spent half an hour with my little brother shoving the snow off none of my chickens got out though but it was a pain in the but to shove it all out

I have a rooster or two that needs a new home if you are ever coming south to the Indy area. I saw a hawk a few days ago but we have gotten crows somehow during the winter. From what I have read, the hawk should move away from my house now that we have crows. I just hope the crows stay.
