These are my two girls (I know the cage is messy today is cleaning day).

Can anyone age these girls? Also are they ready to be placed in a cold garage with their heat lamp? They are in a room right now and are panting so i think it's getting too hot. And one last question how warm should they be at this age? Thanks!!
I would guess between 4 to 6 weeks, probably more the 6 range.

I would put something along the edges of the cage if you were to put them in the garage, keep the draft out. I am offering a temp of between 75 and 80. If they huddle together, put the lamp closer. I think after they get the majority of their first feathers in, it is a matter of their preference to heat rather than a set temperature. Some chickens deal with the cold better than others.

Although, the look awfully lonely. You might need more :D

I want to be on the Indiana list. I am in Roanoke, IN.  I'm looking for French Black Copper Maran hens who are laying or are at least started pullets from good stock.  Anybody out there have any or know of any, nearby?
Welcome. I'm not too far from you, in Southern Huntington county. I can't help you out with FBCM, but I believe SIMZ on this thread breeds them.

I have chicks out in my uninsulated garage that the youngest are little over 2 weeks old. They are doing fine. I am brooding in a smaller refrigerator box and have cardboard over most of the top to block out drafts and insulate it more by keeping heat in. They are all doing fine.

Thanks for the input and I agree they do look lonely. My wife didn't want more then 2 but today is my B-day so it makes it ok to go but more today.... Right?

Welcome to New Members instar8 and Peachesneggs! (sorry if I missed anyone) Please contact CluckAcres or jchny 2000 about adding your name and flock to the Indiana list.

AATH~ Happy Birthday! Yes, you need 2-4 more chicks depending on your space. Two is not a flock.

Keep the photos coming! Loved bradselig’s flock of baby chicks and the Swedish Flower Hens belonging to Leahs Mom who also posted the food fementation information. Thanks! To SIMZ: Nice advertising touch~ the cozy basket of chicks photo!

vickichicki~ Don’t feel bad, when I looked up where to send animallover’s package of incubator materials, the map kept showing Indy when she actually lives in the Lafayette general area. I could also identify with your stories of carting the chicks in and out of the house to let them have some time outside. When we started with chicks last year, we first had them in a large aquarium with a hardware wire type of top, then we switched to a large dog crate--all in my daughter’s bedroom on the second floor (she’s the one who bought them). Everyday, we put all six in a large plastic container, carried them outside and under their pvc tractor. In the evening, we’d pack them up and carry them upstairs. Of course, the chicks loudly objected to the transportation method. We couldn’t get that coop done fast enough!

freeflyin~ UE Nursing is a great program! I understand about your study pressures; my kids are in the same situation. Good Luck! If spring ever arrives, and you want to visit my hens, just PM me.

sebrightmom~ So sorry to hear of your tragic coop fire! I can’t imagine what you and your family have been going through. Best wishes with your spring plans.

Here are a few photos today just north of Indpls (Westfield). Uh..... a nice Spring Day?? The snow is pretty in Jan or Feb but I can do without 2 foot snow drifts in late March! It is several hours of shoveling work for me around the farm even though a snow blower helps with paths. The chickens came out to walk around after I moved some snow from the run.

I'm finishing up hatching in the next few weeks. All I'll have are chicks and most of those are already spoken for. I may have some older chicks in a month or so, but nothing older. I hope you find some!
