INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I got my first chic's tonite, I got a variety, 1 buff Orrington, i egger, a RIR, a barred rock, a cinnamon chic(looks just like the RIR, and a silver laced wyandont., I'm so nervous, why are they huddling in the corner? and they don't seem interested in eating or drinking...do I have to show them? They came from the Big R in Crawfordsville, and were eating there. Maybe there just getting used to a new home?

Pink: Security.... You can hang your heat lamp off to one end so that they can decide which corner is best. We use a regular feeder and small pans for chick feed and shallow pans for water. I put marbles in the pans as well so that nobody takes a bath. They scratch a lot so the feed and water may need to be cleaned and refreshed more than once a day.

Cluck- does the brave roo have a name? Love the pic with the medal!!!

crafty- happy birthday to you.......

chicks arrived, replacement of the orderd chicks gone bad!! So cute and chirping!

so I incubated eggs for a neighbor because he wanted chicks so bad but didn't want to pay a big price for them. I told him 10 bucks for what ever I hatch out of 33 eggs. got 19 that hatched. called him and he said ok. then I didn't hear from him so I said hey you coming to get you chicks? and he said well I thought about it and I really don't want any now. ok no big deal. got rid of them to some one else. two days later he says he wants the chicks and is mad that I have already gotten rid of them. but then it gets better. the lady I sold them to brought them back to me two days ago. I don't know if she didn't follow directions or not but she only brought 13 chicks and told me to keep the 10 dollars. so I figure I will just keep these chicks. didn't even tell the neighbor that I have them back and I bought 15 from rural king to go with them. 10 black sex links that I picked the pullets out of the straight run, and five California white's since they were only .99 a piece! just thought I would ramble

Cant beat that deal! The local tsc has Pekins for 50 cents, straight run chicks for 75 cents and pullets for $1. I'm glad they don't get anything unusual or I would have brought some home!

Is it normal for a newly hatched chick to still be attached to the shell by an umbilical cord? Will it be able to get free on it's own or do I need to help it???
