Crafty chick~It sounds like it will happen regardless because the bottom line is that BYC will make a ton of money partnering/or being bought out by FB. Starting our own site would be a huge undertaking. BYC already has everything set up-- uploading photos, PMs, alerts, all kinds of options and services already set up. There are many cities that already have FB chicken sites, so it would probably be beneficial to combine everything. The exciting part I think is promoting chickens as great pets . . . That's my two cents anyway. : - )
Kristy G~ I think you mentioned that you are making a new coop. We ours was constructed, hardware wire cloth was extended down into the ground several inches and curved forward, making it difficult to gain access if a predator tried to dig down.
Chick-n-farmer~ We use galvanized Fencing Staples to secure hardware wire cloth and are careful not to drop any staples or hardware pieces that could result in a chickens "hardware death."
Too fast~ I noticed your cat in your photos . . . Our chickens chase our cats who try to avoid them if possible. haha
Little Amer Mom~ Congrats on your gosling hatching project!
I just ordered it. I haven't had luck when calibrating my hygrometer. My acu rite from wal Mart only got up to 57% when I salt tested it. So I will return it and pay the extra eight dollars for this one.
I have not used that one. But I do use a remote thermometer/hygrometer in my Sportsman. I stick the sensor on the top shelf and the remote readout on my desk or end table.
It's just a back up for my peace of mind. My Sportsman has a 5 gallon humidity source and a digital thermometer, so it's pretty well fool-proof.
But I did managed to crimp the tubing for the humidity and shut off the water supply by accident when I first used it...
Now I can check the conditions of the incubator from the comfort of my desk.
Remote thermometers are also great in outdoor brooders!! Buy them on clearance at Walmart

Awhile back I discovered a bumble foot infection in one of my chickens. (In early January I think.) I had posted about it on the natural chicken keeping thread and just did a follow-up on what I did. Thought I'd post links to over there (or I could do a duplicate post here if it would be helpful to have the photos and info stored in this thread too...let me know and if y'all want it here too I'll repost it here.). Here are the links:
I read the posts where people suspected the Facebook thing was an April Fool's joke (there were too many to read, though), but I wouldn't have expected the BYC people to post a "joke" that would upset so many of their members-- some for being against it and some for being for it and finding out it is fake. If it was a joke, considering the elaborate business plan they posted, it may have also been a method of seeking reactions from their members about possibly merging with another company in the future. I'm all for jokes, but creating distrust towards the BYC owners results in a negative image.
