INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Please help us name our latest family member. Being less than a week old this little boy is a bottle fed ball of fire and sweet as can be. The only other thing that I am addicted to besides chickens is goats. I raise Boer and Nubian. You are tugging at my heart strings with this adorable picture!

mcurry -

I am thinking of getting a couple boer kids for meat this spring. Have never had goats before and always do a good deal of reading and studying before getting any animals.

Question for you - at what age do you recommend butchering? I was thinking about 6 mos??

I am the same way before getting new animals, and believe it's a very good investment. ;) We have raised ours strictly for 4H & pets up until recently. Now we're breeding and raising for 4H and for market. The rule of thumb that has been taught to us is more weight than age. Although, if taken care of properly, the age will be consistent with the goats reaching that weight. We shoot for 50 lbs.+ Which tends to be around 5-6 months. Good luck, and if you have any more questions about it please feel free to contact me. If I don't know then I'll certainly ask my "mentors" they're long time Boer breeders.

Thank you so much!

Husband wanted lawn mower goats for the pasture but I made him get me a pet

The little baby is just precious! And your other little doll looks so happy

Just love goats when they are little, so much fun to watch them, and they bond to you so fast! Looks like your little dolls have both gained wonderful new best friends! I have a buckling picked out and should have him in 2 weeks when he is weaned. Think I finally have my doeling too, She is 8 months old, and sounds very sweet. This has been a long few years, I will be ecstatic to have goats again! These are my first milkers, all the others were pets/WEED control. I have seen my goats shave off hawthorn trees, eat tons of ragweed. I have only had one difficult buck, and he was the meanest little pigmy I ever laid eyes on! We bottle raised him and his brother, he was a spitfire from the first day we got them.. My nubian wethers were just sweet, same for my very first girl, Nanny. This buckling will be my first oberhasli (swiss alpine) and I think the colors are just striking! I've never raised meat goats, just can't get past the idea, I guess because of my Nanny. I know its similar to deer, I have sure harvested a good number of them over the years.
