INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hey everyone.. I was a Lil sad yesterday after processing our first hog. "Bacon" He was pretty special, lot of fun too.. played with a bowling ball, jumped around like a piglet when i brought a roll of hay with the tractor. LOVED belly rubs ear scratches and just being touched... I really was more attached to him than I should be, but he had a good life. We sure loved him, and he was so spoiled! We moved him away from the other 3 pigs, I didn't want to frighten them. I want my kids to understand sustainability.and my youngest DD (20) even joined us for dinner today, pork loin. It was hard to do this but with GMO lurking... I want to know what is going into our food. We try to raise here what we intend to eat.... It has helped my Moms health a lot.

Wow, you are much braver than I am. I want so much to be able to run a little farm to sustain the family, but sadly we can't even start until we move. Trying hard to find an affordable farm property. Hoping to be able to get a place by the end of this year.

Hope the next one is easier on you! It is a great thing you are doing for your family!

I would guess Cuckoo Maran or possibly Black Langshan. REALLY leaning toward Cuckoo Maran though. Totally just a guess. :D

Would love it if ended up being a Maran pullet! So mych fun guessing. I can tell the little 5 toed Dorkings no problem.
A crevecoeur would be cool too.

We got our 34 acres for under 50 grand. So they are out there. You just have to look. That was with city water and 15 min from a good school. Love our place!

So many of you post good pics of your chickens--mine never pose as I want them to.

Anyhow, here are pics of my white polish hen (reserve continental at Bloomington Saturday--brag, brag

) and a WCB bantam pair. The WCB pullet was reserve AOCCL; meant a lot to me because I lost her mother, my favorite, about 2 weeks ago.

I was give 7 turkey eggs this weekend--never hatched them before. Any advice from the more experienced turkey folks?
I let a broody do mine. I was trying to "break" her of her broodiness, but she had stronger willpower than I did.

When somebody gave me a bunch of Sweetgrass eggs I gave them to her. We were both happy and she did a fabulous job.

I haven't stuck any in the Sportsman, but it hatches everything else with ease. Turkeys should be a cake walk.

Hi! We're new on here....just trying to get the hang of this!

I have had my chicks for about 6 weeks now and there is still so much to learn. Just when I think I have a handle on it, I will learn something new. This is a GREAT thread. Everyone has been very helpful. Warning...It is a busy thread to follow. I think I need to quit my day job just to keep up with all the great information.

Good luck on your CHICKEN ADVENTURE!!!
