INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I have lost 3 chickens today. 2 in the run. 1 was a polish hen and another was a NH hen. the NH was a teenager. Not sure why those 2 died. The only think I can think of is from the weather. Then i had a chick that was in brooder dead. Her back was all bloody and bald. I think she must of got pecked and started bleeding and all the other chicks got her. The rest of my flocks looks good and very active.

I am so sorry to here about your loss. It is always sad to lose a pet.

AATH, I would assume black sexlinks, myself, if all it said was black pullets. :)

Is black sexlinked a breed of its own? I always thought sexlinked just meant they were sexed but they had an official breed. For instance I got a few from TSC that were labeled red sexlinked. But they were actually red comets that had been sex linked. So I guess the question is shouldn't have an actual breed name? Ps if you are confused dont feel bad bc I just confused myself.

PIPD- I looked it up it said they are hybrids of different breeds. So I guess I won't know the two breeds until they feather out.

My understanding is...
Black Sex Link is a cross breed of two different breeds of birds. Sex link refers to the fact that they come out two different colors males are one color and females are a different color.

According to Wikipedia...
Blacks are a cross between a Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire rooster and a Barred Rock hen. Red sex-links are a cross between a Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire rooster and a White Rock, Silver Laced Wyandotte, Rhode Island White or Delaware hen. One example of a red linked breed is the Red Shaver. In Europe, the Cream Legbar (an actual true-breeding pure breed) and ISA Brown sex-links also exist.[3]

Sexlinks are hybrids, mixes of certain breeds that produce chicks that are sexable upon hatch. I believe black sexlinks are from a Rhode Island red rooster over barred rock hens? Anyway, the pullets look like your little girls and the cockerels look similar, but would have a white spot on the backs of their heads. That's only what I would assume they are, though. I'd say you'll have to wait for them to grow out to know for sure. :) If they are black sexlink pullets, as adults they'll be black with varying amounts of red feathers in their hackles.
