INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

1. The 4 inch side up.

2. That depends on a number of things, such as what breeds you have. I think most people say 1-2 feet? My lowest is about half a foot, but I have a blue splash Marans that can barely get up onto that.

3. I've never heard of the roost being too high unless you don't have any way for them to get to it. My highest is about 6 feet, and the lower roosts form steps that lead up to it. I'd say just make sure there's a foot or two of head space between the top roost and the ceiling if you're putting them that high, and no more than 2 or 3 feet higher than the next lowest roost.

4. Mine are about a foot apart and I get occasional messes, as well as lower roost hens having their heads in higher roost hens' 'bloomers'. I would make them more than 1 foot apart, myself.

As a side note, you didn't ask about it, but the amount of space per bird recommended is 8 inches of roost space. :) Hope that helped.

ETA: This is in regards to strssdmom's questions in this post.

hello fellow hoosiers BYCers,
Its been a while since I have posted on here, but i have tried to keep up with the forum through the e-mail notifications i get. A lot has happened since i last posted on here! 1) I know now that i am turning into a chicken addict with each day and 2) my first flock of chicks(ens) have made it to the 7 week mark!!! YAY!!!

With that being said, wanted to show off my newest chickies!! I got them at Orschlen's in greenfield and the are too cute! They are both Ameraucana pullets and it seems that they are so much more tiny than my first flock. Here they are!!

My heart is sad though because my two silver laced wyandottes i think might be roos. I so desparately wanted them to be hens but all the pictures i have looked at seems to point to roos. Their wattles were the first thing to grow in and their combs are ruby red(my leghorns have small, white combs) and this is my first season for ever having chickens) What do you guys think?? If they are roos, would anybody like a couple of handsome silver laced roos to add to their flock???? thanks for reading!

I have the 4" flat and regular branches from out in the woods that are about 3" diameter. They use both of them okay, but I've been told that when given a choice, they prefer branches.

I can't attest to that...just what I've heard.

I had the 4" flat (mine are only about 1" deep so 4x1) for my first 6 and when I had the chicks hatch that are now16 weeks, we put in a branch for them. The oldsters weren't going to give up their place so they never tried the branches so mine haven't really had the opportunity to choose.

But people that I respect their years of experience do tell me that theirs choose the branches every time over the 2x4 boards.

Here's a photo where you can see. The flat on the left is what we originally used. The branch on the right is what we added for the kiddos.
But our flats ARE NOT 2" tall...I think it's only 1" deep which you can see in the photos.
