INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I'm in South Bend and not even sure where I should get my chicks from, I have the ones I want in mind but only know of Rural King and Tractor Supply,
I'm kind of scared to order them from any where, any advice?

Welcome! Glad you found us. As far as where to get your chicks, t kinda depends on what your looking for. I've purchased several from the farm stores and never had issues. I personally like to go before they get their newest shipments of chicks and purchase what's left over. Since these chicks are around a week old, they maybe cheaper, one week less of feed I have to provide, and typically healthier than day old chicks. Another great place is on the Indiana BYC members page located here

You may find someone close by that has some chicks or chickens for sale.

Oh yep that was me. I didnt even realize that was you. LOL  I wanted to get some goslings so bad but was limited on money. I went there to get feed. If they have any there next week i will be getting me some more ducks and goslings. Those are getting huge wonder how long they have had them in there.

I know they have been there for atleast 2 weeks, but I'm thinking this was the 3rd week of them being there. If only I have a better set up for waterfowl! They also had a couple polish in there. Looked like an all white and a white crested blue. I was good and left empty handed.

Assuming you want hatchery chicks....I got my first chicks from Matthy's Farm Market on the west side. They get their chicks from the same hatchery as TSC and Rural King (Townline Hatchery).

The reason I liked getting them from Matthy's instead of RK or TSC is that you order what you want AHEAD OF TIME and they call you the day they come in and you take them right from the ship box. They don't go into big tubs and have people walking in there bringing in all kinds of possible diseases, etc. and they don't sit there in the store in tubs that are too crowded. You get them within a day of hatch.

Now if you don't want Hatchery Chicks (like if you want heritage birds, rare breeds, etc.) I could give you some other ideas.

I never even thought of them!! We're on the north side and just never go over that way. We would like a Rhode Island Red, Australorp, Orpington and I would love a silver laced Wyandotte. Maybe it's weird but I want them all different, they'll most likely be more pet than just just egg layers :)

My first batch I got from them had 2 Barred Rocks, 2 RIRs, 2 EEs (they sell as araucanas). You'd have to give them a call and see if they're ordering in another batch this spring. I think they did their first batch already and I don't know how many times they do an order.

Yah...I wouldn't have thought of them either but I was looking for an item that they had last spring. When I was there I learned that they order them in and I liked that idea better than the bins in the store thing. So I ordered from them. They have an order form that lists what they have and the prices (I think they will email it to you if needed.) You just fill it out and I think they have you pay ahead...if I remember correctly, they were about $1.69 or so each last year!

Oh...and I had NEVER BEEN TO MATHYS before...just was a fluke I went out there as they were the only local place that had an item I was looking for. I live more near to Elkhart County so it's definitely not in my normal "stomping grounds"!
