I didn't forget about you Cluck. I figured you were still up for the bantams. I'm just not sure which ones are roos yet. Except for a couple. The wyandotte I'm worried about because he is so sweet and very pretty, but being a standard size bird I don't want him to end up as someones dinner. So I want to find a home for him.I will take the bantam and cochin.
So I just went out to do my chicken rounds and noticed a few of my girls are looking a bit scraggly. Three of the girls are missing feathers on their back just above their tails. Do I assume they are becoming the favourite choice for the Rooster?
I had a quick look and I don't see anything raw, just missing feathers.
I know my Rooster is starting to grow his spurs, they have gone from little nubs to half inch long.
I hope he does not start tearing my girls up.
Quote: Looks like an excellent choice. The buckets are what works best for you,one single bucket will even work fine, just keep replacing what you use. top with water. I have so many buckets because there's so many birds here. And also feeding other animals, such as the hogs. To determine what amount I give them, I start with whats recommended. Some feed bags only say free choiceso, lets guess at 1/4 cup per bird fermented. Probably way too much, but unless they are meat birds, they will leave food if they are "full". The next day adjust up or down as to what they need. You will also notice less water intake, since the FF is moistened, they drink less water. As your birds get older you will have to readjust. Whatever is left after 15 to 20 minutes I take up, I don't leave food in or around any coops at night.I feed early evening so I can do a headcount, and peek at everyone to look for problems, injury, etc. and make sure they are all locked in for the night.![]()

I also don't wash the eggs. And I don't put them in the fridge - unless they are going to customers! Mine get to stay out on the counter. (There is research on the why...and I know my chickens are healthy. I wouldn't keep store-bought, factory-farmed eggs out of the fridge.)
It always looks like Easter on my counter!

one of my eggs in the incubator has a pip mark. yay. this is the farthest I have gotten in the hatching process. about how long after I see the pip mark should the chicken start hatching out?
