Mother2Hens, Where did I find the hurt chicks or the chicken rescue? Not sure which you meant, but I'll tell you both anyway

I found the hurt chicks are Rural King, they had a whole bunch of 3 or 4 week olds in a bin and they were picking on 4 chicks. Two have no feathers on their wings and one is pecked to the bone (poor dear) and the others have badly damaged vents. Apparently having the chicks die rather than find a seperate bin for them was preferable to them.

And as to the rescue, I already have a dog/cat rescue (Furever Home) and when I decided to get chicks this year (my mom and grandma always kept some when I was younger) I noticed how (in my area at least) chickens are treated "expendable". So if 4 chicks in a bin of 30 are pecked to death, it's ok. I don't like any animal suffering, so I decided that since there was no chicken rescue anywhere near me, I would just add on to my existing rescue!

Hipe that answered your question!

GREAT IDEA SHAWNASCOTT! I think you would have to attempt teaching them appropriate chick/chicken care too. Maybe have fliers with you in your car for when you find them being cared for like that. I would definitely have a chicken rescue if I owned our property and didn't rent :/

I am bumping my post because I really need you guys!! I know irritating huh, lol. I Just commited to a pair of SQ silkies I am picking up sunday, I am trading my blue cochin cockerel for them. I am kinda at a loss right now with my cockerels and I could really use some advice from you all. I think I may be BYC codependent.

Ok everybody, I need expert advice over here, like my post from yesterday stated, I think I have way to many roos. Our coop is 8x4 with a 10x4 run attached. We have ten chickens, looking like 5 and 5 hens/roos, I think. If I can't find homes for some of these boys, can I keep them all together? They will also be free ranging in the half acre pasture they are in with our alpacas. I don't want my hens beaten up, and I don't want fighting. They are 8 and 9 weeks old. 3 or 4 bantam roos and 2 LF roos, 4 LF hens and not sure about the bantams completely yet on sex.I may have hens there. The brahmas are iffy. I know Cluck is interested in my bantams maybe, I would like to keep them if I can. Pretty attached, and killing is not an option. HELP!!

From left Gus (cockerel) Sparky ? Laya ?

They are attached at the hip. Literally.

I tried! But like always, being young and female, the man refused to listen! So I just bought the injured ones.

Anyone interested in 2 Russian Orloff chicks (LF) about 4 weeks old? I was going to add them to free ranging flock, but just added 3 more naked necks instead. These came from a breeder, not hatchery. Not quite sure what to ask for them.

Yes, the hen in your post was an Easter-egger, and yes, most people / places sell their Easter-eggers as Amaraucanas or Araucanas, including most hatcheries. Because she's an Easter-egger, there really isn't a name for her color, just the 'oh, she looks like my so-and-so'. In this case, she looks a rather lot like my old girl, Cubby.
