INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Thanks for the feedback everyone
I was planning to hook chicken wire tot he fence bottom and bury it in the bottom of the run, then run tin over the top of the run, since I had a shed die and the sides still look pretty good for keeping rain off

Sounds like a good idea! My first coop is a 12x14 shed, poor thing needs a roof badly. I am still deciding if it needs replaced or rebuilt

Today was a great day! Chickens got out to free range!!! My sister brought me grass clippings for the chicken run. The chickens LOVED it! I really enjoy watching my chickens learning to do new things.
Me too, and mine are a year old now, but are still very entertaining. They are so used to me digging out weeds and digging for worms, so the other day when I got ready to plant some flowers they gathered all around me as usual. Then I dug a small hole, put the plant in and covered it up. They looked like, "Whaaaaaat?!?! They thought I had lost my mind. And they complained loudly!

Haha... Cutest dusters I have ever seen. I have to run to Sam's today. See if I can pick me up a box of them.

Guess I will have to. CUt the grass today then huh. Riding lawn mower is stuck in the water logged section of the yard. Have to break out the push mower. Fortunately right at an acre I can handle it. Will be cutting around the ride on. Sure the neighbors are going to love my new yard ornament.
Yard ornament, eh? You can call it 'art' and apply for a $10k grant lol.

I have a friend who has an old metal wheel barrow out in her front yard as a decoration. It will probably have some flowers in it soon, but all last Winter when my wife and I would go over to her house, I would say to her " I see you still haven't put your wheel barrow away yet?" Anyway , you still have some time to get the mower out of the mud---------if you still want to do so. Ha !
Hey. We have an old wheel barrel. I better not let my wife see your post!

Chicken wire, we've learned, is good for keeping chickens in an area, but not really good for anything else. We used 2x4 welded wire with hardware cloth on top of that when we buried it about 6 inches down and about 24 inches out, away from the inside of the run. To keep the digging predators out. Remember, they have all year to dig and find the weak spot.

Someone posted a link about not feeding too many mealworms, and what to feed them in general. One of the things it said was grass clippings is a no-no, it can lead to an impacted crop. It was posted on the internet, so it must be true. I think the link was on page 592 or so.

Cant wait to see all the pictures! Doing hatches every tuesday. Really wish I had a good camera, my phone doesn't do so good. Any advice on a good camera?
Yes. About $225 for a decent one. We bought a Canon Powershot 260sx, love it. Especially the 20x optical zoom. I suggest you get a camera with at least a 10-12x optical zoom.
This was $229 on Amazon, it was a new camera Canon came out with Spring '12. Shoots 1080 video with stereo also, and many manual settings. Really glad we went with the long zoom.

Assuming you want a point and shoot, not a D-SLR. Good ones start at like $500, and then you buy lens and all sorts of stuff, can get a lot of money wrapped up in a new hobby!

I have an older canon rebel from when they first came out. I love it. I love the ability to change lenses for my bird watching. Especially when I can convert my field scope to a lens. Means I can shoot pictures of something half a block away.

I think a lot of the point and click digitals are pretty good now. Should not set you back too much, guess it depends on what you want to get out of the camera.
If it is for an occasional picture without wanting motion capture you could spend about $100 and be pretty pleased.

Could always Craigslist it with a parcial trade on some chickens.

1000

This is why I love my camera.. Just found this and edited my post to put in on. The clarity blows my mind. Even with only have 8 megapixels. Would love the one of the new ones.. T4i 18 mega pixals on that bad boy. Not sure I could stomache $1000 for a new camera though.

I would have to jazz it up first. I have a stick of glue and some glitter, add a decorative plant or two. Label it as 'enviroart'.

With my grant money I could build a mansion coop and be the envy of all.
