INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I'm at around $600' still need to buy felt paper for the roof and possibly more shingles. I have about 4 bundles left over from doing my house. Also need some corners and j trim for the siding which came off the shed that a tree took out. I was able to get some wood discounted from lowes in their cull area, but most is new wood. I will be reusing the uprights from the old shed in their run area, and I still need to get the fencing for that. Uh still so much to do and I hurt, lol, I'm too old to be doing this! I just ache from head to toe!

I haven't let mine free range yet, too many small pieces in the yard ATM, so they get part of my garden and a grassy area that I made sure was good and clean, lol. I truly can't wait until I can just sit and watch them in their house and run.

Chickens and the coop are looking good. The coop build takes longer than you think, eh? And costs more $$$, right? I thought with our pallets that our build would be around $200-400, and we've saved most of the reciepts. The envelope is pretty thick, I don't have the nerve to add them up yet. Probably around $1100! That first 2 eggs will be $550 each! At least we are getting entertained now the the whole build is 98% complete. It's nice to be able to open the pop door and let them roam thier run, and then with some supervised free ranging in the back. Why do they love the bushes so much??? I have to send my 8 y. o. son in there to flush them out. Most of ours are too skittish to let us easily approach them, your ee story below is funny. Freezing then taking off! We are first time chickeners also.

I think if we all went through how much money we spend building our 'cheap' coop there would be alot of fainting going on.

I suggest you spend a few days with some raggy I don't care if they get covered in chicken poop clothing on and sit in the coop/ run with them. Offer them some delicious treats from your hand while you are there. May take a while. Just need to show them you are not a threat.
I can go into the coop and several of my chickens will actually jump on my shoulder pirate style. I guess the disadvantages mean they will check everything out on you. I have gone in there after a painting job, perched myself against the wall to talk to the girls. You know, paint on bare skin arms looks like fun. Ended up pecking my painting blobs... hurt alot.. I ended up leaving.

Mine still do not like full on handling especially the roo, he panics and will run off when he is placed on the ground. As least I know if they got out, I can get close enough to pick them up if I needed too.

Forgot to add that the larger ones are 14 weeks and the smaller girls are 10 weeks. I have one ee that stops and does a weird thing when I pet her. She drops her shoulders and raises her tail and freezes, just stays like that for a bit, then takes off. What's that all about? Also I have two BA whose combs have shot up and turned red this week could those be roo's? Yes, I'm new to chickens. Blatantly so lol, I feel like at this point I should know this. But then they do something new and I feel like a noob!

Thanks for the help.

Great pics! When the hens drop down like that, they are ready for a roo to mate. Mine didnt start doing it for me until all the roosters were gone. I guess I'm top rooster around here now lol

Haha -- I like the new name you gave me. No, I wouldn't keep him although I hope he lives happily ever after in the tree near my back door! He is so sweet. I really didn't want to interfere with Mother Nature in the first place, but I just could not leave him out to be snatched up by a hawk or to starve. He kept running back to us.

strssd mom~ Our crab apple tree dropped its petals a week ago and left a pretty carpet like yours. The chickens loved to eat the petals. The crab apple in bloom is the only time that our tree looks beautiful. However, it's going to make a great squirrel home because of several hollow limbs with openings as you can see in the photo above. Before we decide to leave him outside, I'll send DH up a ladder with a saw or something to enlarge a hole if needed. ha The squirrel has already been adding bits of leaves to one of the holes. The first night he spends outside, I will probably be in a sleeping bag at the base of the tree! I'll be like you all who worried about putting your baby chicks in the coop the first night. Btw, strssd mom, your chicken loving doggie Berren blends in nicely with his feathery bands and tail! Pretty dog!

Speaking of fluffy, your chickens have really grown and fluffed up, Kiniska!

Old rooster~ When I was a kid, a flying squirrel flew into our old farmhouse somehow-- it probably hitched a ride in, but I remember it flying from room to room and landing on the tops of drapery panels until my dad threw a towel over it and put it back outside. Flying squirrels seem more like bats.

Cluck~ I'm sure that it was NOT a squirrel that chewed your satellite dish wire! haha Glad you are getting back online.

Hogster~ can't wait to see pictures of your coop!

Animal lover~ If Mr. Frizz pecks your hands, just make sure to wear sturdy gloves when you assert your dominance so you don't flinch or act unsure because you're afraid of being pecked.

mememe~ such sweet human and chick baby photos!

vickichicki~ I want a MATCHING hen and baby CHICK. haha I have enough grown babies, but thanks for the offer!

Well I was going to offer you some felt and paper for free, but after googling a map for you area.. Not sure it is worth the drive..However, should you ever be taking a trip southward... well I can definatly help you out then.

I shall get video and pictures of me in in a chicken costume lol and I separated Ms. May and Mr. Frizz so Ms Mays feathers on her head will grow back glad I have 3 cages for them ... yesterday I had all my chickens running around with my German Rottweiler and Flo (one of the babys) desides to snuggle with her it was so cute :) and she desides to snuggle with me she's just so cute lol

Thank you!! I will let you know. PS, What kind are your dogs?

This is Alfie, our English Bulldog. He'll be 8 next month. He is our couch potato.

And this is the puppy. Talia is our 8 month old Doberman. I had forgotten what an effort puppies were! Our last Doberman was a rescue so he was 6 y/o when we got him and I thought he had energy. Talia runs me ragged. She's pretty funny with the chicks so far too. Can't quite figure out what to make of them, but she's being very good with them as we are trying to get her accustomed to them.

If I had to guess it has to do with them having a permanent building on site that just sells cages and all supplies to make them. They are very reasonable in price as well.

Be sure to post if you ever decide to go!
well it might be easier to answer what kind I DON'T plan on getting lol. Right now I have a 9 yr old Bouvier des Flandres, 4 yr old Miniature Pinscher, and a 1 yr old French Bulldog. While I still have a lot of breeds I'd like own before deciding a favorite, the french bulldog has really jumped to the top of this list. He is such a goof ball, but also loves to cuddle. Here is a recent pic of him sunbathing.

I just adore Frenchies! Bulldogs are my favorite breed. My husband and I have toyed with the idea of adding a Frenchie to the pack, but my best friend had severe issues with her English and Frenchie to the point that they had to get rid of the Frenchie. Broke her heart and I can't imagine having to go through that, so we've never done it. Love your babies!
