INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hi, I'm just starting chickens. I am near Bloomington, IN. I have 4 Australorp pullets and 2 EE (they said Araucanas) pullets from RK. I have been looking for an Australorp rooster or cockrel. I can't find one. Would anyone have a young roo or cockrel? I would be willing to drive a little ways to get him.

As I said I'm just starting chickens, I've never done this before so I'm learning a lot

. I have their coop ready, they are in a brooder box right now as they are just over a week old. I had rented a stump grinder and I have tons of wood chips from grinding many stumps. Would this be ok to use as bedding?

I'm getting 2 Blue Swedish ducks that I ordered next week from Murray Mcmurray. They said delievery the week of the 13th, so I assume it can be any of those days thru the week.

If anyone has an Australorp cockel please message me. Thanks!

welcome from down the street! I'm from Bloomington, or actually northern end of Monroe county, glad your here....

Wow no time to catch up right now but hope everyone and their flocks are well or on the mend. My little experience with this last batch of birds has taught me not to use medicated feed with my little ones. I lost four while on it and almost 5 more. pasty butt dehydration not sure exactly why or what cause. all 25 looked rough 3 days ago and pasty butt was getting worse I took them off medicated feed and put Merricks poultry electrolyte supplement in their water along with a dose of ACVUP and today they look like show quality babies. No more lethargy and caked on poo. I decided to use medicated since I got them from auction I won't use it again

Medicated feed shouldn't cause problems. It just has a low dose coccidiosis medicine in it that prevents the chicks from coming down with the disease. (Not that I use medicated feed, either, just saying...)

I wouldn't think it could cause it but it counteracted most of the helpful things I was being told to do medicine kills probiotics and probiotics negate the medicine so ACV UP is now bad to use and most poultry water supplements are counter productive so the top electrolyte replacements and vitamin sources for them cause a potential window of 5 days with a severely weakened immune system and until medicine is gone and probiotics get to work

Huh, I use medicated feed for the chicks and have very little issues with the chicks I hatch here. The feed store chicks tend to have a week of pasty butt regardless of what I do. I do add probiotics to the water atleast once a week and ACV several times a week.

Hey Everyone! I'm not new to BYC but when I was on here there was no one posting to Indiana. I was told to come back by jchny2000, so here I am. I have chickens, dogs, cats, horses, ducks, and soon to be geese in my backyard! I'm looking to get a couple more turkeys and maybe some guineas. I also have 10 Dozen duck eggs in my fridge if anyone knows anyone that would want a dozen or more. They are $4 a dozen. I also sell hatching eggs as well, and currently have duck eggs in my incubator with some soon to be goose eggs! I'm so excited! If anyone is interested PM me I'm located 5 minutes away from south Anderson. Thank you!

On your duck eggs, did you know you can freeze them? They still work great for baking and scrambled

Mount Healthy is another one that's nearby. I am in the market for a couple Australorp roos also.

I'm very appreciative of this forum and all the resources it's members provide for each other.

Same for me Brad. Wonder what the deal is, every chick I buy from the farm stores same story. My chicks/turkeys from the hatcheries have been fine... Makes you wonder what happens at the feed stores?

Guys, I have won my first batch of Quail on ebay!! :yesss: Really excited about trying them out! anyone know how many eggs you can stuff into the LG?
Congrats! How many eggs did you win? I'm addicted to eBay now. And I wanted to be done hatching for now, but ironically my incubator has more eggs in it now than it ever has! We have 11 birchen Marans, 8 salmon faverolle, 4 coronation Sussex, 19 silkies, and 26 blue laced red wyandottes! Depending on when they ship, ill also have crested legbar eggs in there too! I'm screwed lol.

On a good note, I just meet up with a lady and sold 17 chicks today! And 15 more are sold pending pickup! Brings my chick count back down to around 40!
