INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Out of 14 chicks I hatched I am 95% sure I only have one rooster. One rooster! I couldnt believe it. And someone my dad works with was wanting to but some chickens 5 pullet and 1 cockeral or 6 pullets and 1 cockeral, i cant remember which. But not only do i only have one cockeral, but I already have a goodhome for it. He just wants a rooster to protect the hens that he will be getting from me. Unless I really get attached to it, then I will keep it and have to find him another rooster lol.But I dont see that happening, because this chick has never had an intrest in me, just eats and walks around. Good withme, I dont need another rooster lol.

I am usually don't have good luck. But it looks like for once I was lucky, unless one of the pullets is being sneeky and turns out to be a cockeral lol. Lets hope thats not the case. And it sounds like you just don't have good luck getting pullets. Well I hope your luck turns around.

H guys, I have been thinking about planning a get together late summer, Either at my place (or somewhere that will allow us to do what I would like to do...) I am about 20 minutes NE of Indy.. (see my avatar, thanks M2H!) I know there's a few of our members that are new to the processing side of chicken keeping. If I wanted to plan an event, like an afternoon few hours thing, who is interested? I would also welcome anyone willing to help teach
highfive.gif
My other Ideas on it are: BYOB - bring your own bird. Some of us have a rooster or 2 that has become physco
hide.gif
I am thinking a pitch in would be good too, finger food stuff. This will be a hands on thing, so everyone gets a chance to try it themselves.
I have processed on a few occasions, all were cornish cross so far. My latest processing was my hog, done entirely at home. Also have hunted rabbit, deer, squirrel..My big job coming up are the BBW turkeys. They would be easier to see the process than a chicken. (basically the same jut way BIGGER

) Shout out, or PM me.. If I see there's enough interest I can start offering up some dates.
I/we'd be interested in this. Some Sunday in August?
The chickies have gone insane.

This one, I don't even know.

Yes, they are insane. Bring on the insane asylum!

You flatter me, sir.

I only know what has worked for me, but if you could put that in writing for my husband and kids I would appreciate it!

And yes, I am a girl and therefore very jealous of your ability to discretely mark territory.

I don't know about numbers x size for quail. Some people keep them in breeding trios, but I prefer groups. They can be vicious to each other
and territorial. The cage I just built was 7' x 3' and just 10" tall and houses 11 quail. My reasons for building that size was that I had a piece of leftover 1/4" hardware cloth that size to use as a bottom. ( I really hate cutting hardware cloth) The pen is working great with no bullying going on.

There is a quail forum on here, so I would advise checking there for info.
Ha. You outta try writing your name in the snow. Lots of footprints involved for girls. Speaking of marking your territory!

My DH and I would love to come and see this as we are also thinking of getting some meat birds in the fall, or maybe next spring. We don't have any roosters to add but would be willing to come and learn!

Shawna she is a cutie... mine is a lab mix/pit anyone know a good place to get her spayed?
our animal shelter and animal control both offer lists with estimates. I think one of them even offers to complete the procedure. Perhaps yours would do the same.
Quote: how does one know if the gnats are killing the chickens? are there welts? What should I be on the lookout for. I have seen a few of the house style gnats out back but nothing like the picture posted. Ours are black and look like tiny tiny tiny flies.
