INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

H guys, I have been thinking about planning a get together late summer, Either at my place (or somewhere that will allow us to do what I would like to do...) I am about 20 minutes NE of Indy.. (see my avatar, thanks M2H!) I know there's a few of our members that are new to the processing side of chicken keeping. If I wanted to plan an event, like an afternoon few hours thing, who is interested? I would also welcome anyone willing to help teach

My other Ideas on it are: BYOB - bring your own bird. Some of us have a rooster or 2 that has become physco

I am thinking a pitch in would be good too, finger food stuff. This will be a hands on thing, so everyone gets a chance to try it themselves.
I have processed on a few occasions, all were cornish cross so far. My latest processing was my hog, done entirely at home. Also have hunted rabbit, deer, squirrel..My big job coming up are the BBW turkeys. They would be easier to see the process than a chicken. (basically the same jut way BIGGER

) Shout out, or PM me.. If I see there's enough interest I can start offering up some dates.
Our family would be interested! We process our rabbits, but would like to learn how to properly do a chicken. I say 'properly' because the last time we did our rabbits we also did a nasty rooster, which didn't go as smoothly as the rabbits

! Could I suggest that whenever you decide to do it that it be as early in the afternoon as possible for those of us who would need to travel 2 1/2 - 3 hours to come? Thanks for offering to put an event like this together!

I'd be interested in getting together, even if it was just to get together and visit. Seeing if I could actually do it or not would be worthwhile as well!

I captured some and took them to the extension office and they told me what they were and what to do. They said to try miracle coat No Fly Zone it is for horses but it is working so far. My younger chicks have bites on them, my turkeys have bites on them too. But everyone is getting better better now.

Ok so here are the new kids. I had a chance to look at them a bit while doing pics. Hadnt really had a chance since I got them!! Just fixed the light and bedding and food and water hand put them in. Course they all slept from the long ride and excitement.

I hope this is allowed on this thread..

I'm looking for a few more pullets either marans or gold laced wyantdottes. Does anyone in the central/east central Indy area have any for sale? I'm just looking to round out my little flock. Thanks!

I have been trying to catch up on reading all of our thread posts. I noticed Chic-n-farmer’s alerts about Buffalo Gnats. I hadn’t heard of them, but I am familiar with “Biting Midges” aka “No See Ums,” which have been a problem here the past few years. I Googled more info and found that they are closely related to Buffalo Gnats.

We had tried the vanilla approach for Midges, but it didn’t help us.

I am going to try to do what sirbuster did-- capture a few and take them to the (Purdue) county extension office, which luckily is nearby. I have noticed that the past few days my Black Jersey Giant has seemed extra annoyed by gnats-- not sure what kind they are. She has been shaking her head often and has stayed in shady areas more than the other hens. Her behavior makes sense after ready some info I found that I am posting below:

From the Internet: Buffalo gnats can kill chickens. The gnats arrive in swarms. The swarms can kill chickens and small mammals by biting and sucking their blood, much like mosquitoes. Many chickens who survive the bites have fatal allergic reactions. The flies can also block the chickens’ nostrils and asphyxiate them. There have been reports of people losing whole flocks to the blood thirsty little flies in one day.

What can you do to protect your chickens if you have buffalo gnats in your area?

Make sure your chickens have shade. Dense dark shade is best. If you don’t have a shady spot, you can create one simply by leaning a large board against a fence or tree.

If your coop is large enough, you could keep them inside. Keep it dark inside. Turn off all the lights. You may want to add some fine screening over any windows or vents.

Buffalo gnats do not like wind. You can use a fan to create wind in your run and/or coop.

Check for standing water and remove it and keep it cleared away.

Some people apply vanilla or Skin So Soft to the chickens heads, combs and wattles. You have to reapply it quite often. You can burn citronella torches around the run. There are a few people who hang fabric softener sheets around the coop.

Pray for hot weather. Buffalo gnats do not like temperatures over eighty degrees.
