INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hey all! I am new to BYC and new to raising chickens too! I will catch up on the past week or so of this thread, so I know what is going on, but I just wanted to introduce myself!

My name is Melissa and I live in southern Indiana. I have seven beautiful six week old Wyandottes, three SLW and four GLW. So far, it looks like six are pullets and one is a roo.

Looking forward to learning more about raising these cute chicks. :)

welcome to the thread!

Both my golden polish turned out to be roo's :( my rooster' s brother decided to start showing his manly side this morning :( go figure the two I bought because I love the looks of them , jinxed me and became boys :( husband says no room for two cocks in the coop. :( maybe I can hide the other? Lol

Hello all ye Hoosiers! I live in Dubois County. I have had chickens for almost 2 months and I am in love with all my girls (at least I hope they're all girls!) I have 21 of various breeds and I love seeing their personalities change as they are getting older. And contrary to what I have heard/read, I have two turkeys in the yard with the chickens and they protect them and snuggle up at night. I haven't seen a fight yet!

I have already gone through the ups and downs of buying and losing some of my flock. I had a beautiful Barred Rock named Agnes that fell into a crevice and couldn't get upright; the next day I found her and cried. I cried over a chicken I had for a month. But she was the first one that didn't go crazy when I wanted to hold her.

My dad and I are currently building a house for them. Teaching them to go in at night will be fun since they have been free-ranging 24/7 lately!

The most amazing thing I have seen so far is there was recently a big, bright, full moon and when I got home around 10:30 that night, the 8 oldest girls were lined up on the fence just a "purring" away. If I would've had a camera handy it would've been a great photo.

I am becoming fluent in chicken speak and chicken math!! Glad to see we have an Indiana thread!

Hi, Vickichicki, 2 questions:

How do you get added to the Indiana BYC list?

and a posting thing I haven't figured out yet, where do you go to add your websites, little info stuff that goes at the bottom of your posts?

Thanks!

Send me a PM with your county/town and flock info (large fowl or bantam, duck, goose, turkey & breed) and I'll get you added to the list! You should be able to change your signature from your user CP. I believe it's under profile info, but I may be wrong on that.

I'm trying to figure out how to keep the guineas here and not flying off to Galveston. I was thinking of cutting flight feathers on one wing on each bird and then letting them loose in the chicken yard. An alternative is to pinion them like I did the pheasants 30 years back, but my heart is a good deal softer nowadays (along with my head).

I have neighbors about 180' on either side on the barn. 4 acres, but 180 x 1000 feet; long and skinny.

Suggestions?

John
Guineas will range much further than chickens. Short of keeping them penned, I don't know how to keep them away from your neighbors. Maybe you should just get on really good terms with the people next door... hopefully they like guineas, too.

I have had people stop in the road, by our lane, to take photos of mine.

Funny how we take a strange critter for granted and some people have never seen one.

Well, I think I have spotted another roo. I've been watching this leghorn for quite a while, and I've been debated on the sex. In addition to the comb being larger and redder, s/he now has a red wattle/earlobes. Not quite sure on what it is, other than it is red and not there on the other two. If it is a boy I am going to be so mad!! I got it from the pullet bin!

Soo if anyone wants him or a D'Uccle roo, or a mystery chicken who I tentatively call a RIR, let me know

Roo? Around 10wks the one behind it is 16 wk red sex linked and this one is a New Hampshire. I have a feeling it's a roo.
