INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Welcome to all the new people.

Hello all you doomsday prophets :p

I've been lurking and I like the get together idea

I'm currently hunting Bigfoot he showed up on my doorstep dressed as a raccoon and tried to haul off my loaded 80 gal garbage can.

All is well in chickens though I lost a goat Kidd to unknown infection dispite 5 vet trips

I started my new chicken palace this weekend ill post some pics Monday night
Now I know that's just a story about bigfoot.

I heard on George Nory one night that bigfoots are psychic, live in another dimension, travel by UFO and are time travellers to boot. That's why you can't ever find one.
So, there is no possible way it was a bigfoot, just a raccon like you thought.

Really, tho, sorry about the kid goat loss, and yes we want pics about the new palace.

So, we had no idea our 12 week old chickens would try to eat just about anything, including dead baby birds

. I'll make the picture small if anybody is squeamish. Just click on it:

We finally got the bird out, but it was too late. I wondered why our chicken was running around, with other birds chasing her!

More from this weekend:

Did you know that if you can put salt on a birds tail feathers, they can't fly away and you can catch and pet them? My 2 kids now know that.

We live just south of Indianapolis Motor Speedway (the track), and I have to always scramble to get a picture of the flyover.
This year there was some from WW2, no modern planes because of the budget cuts. I find these WW2 plane flyovers just
as cool as the modern ones.

It is funny telling the kiddies old wives tales and having them act upon it... Much amusement to be had by the parents watching. I missed seeing the planes this year, normally see that at some point. Guess I will have to wait for the airshow instead. One of my favourite things to do. Although with the new date changes the last one I went to was a bust due to the weather. Glad I paid extra to sit somewhere good for that. Feeling that rumble from the jets flying over gives me warm fuzzy feelings. But not as fuzzy as the feeling I get from watching the chickens chase who ever found a worm.

Well I think I'm in trouble! We were in Aurora today and I noticed a Orscheln store. I piped off with" I wonder if they still have chicks" to my DH. He responded " Oh no, didnt you read that they've had a chick shortage this year??? You bought them all"!!!!! Guess I better quit now!!

On a different note. At what age is a good age to send Roos to freezer camp. I'm ready to spend more time with girls and there are too many boys in the way!! If the girls start laying around 20 weeks is that when the boys go bye bye?? And if any one needs a rooster to keep not eat( they are already promised) I have em!!!! GLW, RIR,Millie's, a white Leghorn.

I think some secret chicken buying while DH is not there is the only way you are going to end up with more, that or a sob story about some chicks listed locally for 'rescue' and you just had to help out

I think freezer camp is dependent on the age. If you are sure they are going, the younger the better. The breed plays a small part in the processing age. Like Cornish X are butchered at something silly like 8 - 10 weeks. Duel purpose are between 12 - 16.
You can obviously butcher at any age you choose. I will have to do something for my girls when they stop laying in a few years. I make a good chicken pie and DH makes some mean chicken and noodles. As they ate older their meat will be stringy, not roasting quality.
We have 5 leghorns that we're given to me, they are not a breed I really care to own (sounds harsh I know. I am more of a brown egg kinda girl.. Comes from living in another country).
They are either heading to someone else home, if not, when they are of age, they will be food.

If Jcnhy can get the arrangments set up, I might take them to that. Having 5 means I shall have spares if someone does not have any to spare.

So we laid a patio yesterday, topped that off with a second step up patio with huge slabs of stone... I was feeling it by the end of the evening, while we were winding down I took a trip to TSC for some emergancy crumbles for the little ones. Did not fancy mushing pellets to feed them. Well to cut a long story short, I pulled a muscle throwing the darn food on the back of the truck.
Plans for going back and finishing the coop after work failed. I think it is fate. There is a reason the chicks are still in my house.

Moving on from that... I think I have my plans set out for my future chickens. If anyone has these, let me know.. I am interested very soon.
My shopping list:

Lavender Orpington rooster
EE rooster
Bantam Cochin rooster... Something for the blues, barred and orange (yeah orange)

Here are pictures I took this morning of our broody girl -- hasn't moved from last night! In the close up picture you can see she's wearing a chicken apron. I need to make some more for the rest of our girls -- the consequence of having 1 too many roosters for the amount of girls we have. The roo that turned mean has gone to freezer camp so we just have the one now. Do we need to try to move her somewhere else to hatch the eggs? If she does end up with chicks, will the big girls torment the babies? Just curious what we should do. And, of course, she's in the favorite egg laying box!

Now come on pipd, we have a favorite here as well, our smallest one.  I don't do any emoticons usually bc I'm lazy.  We love seeing the love for the chickens, especially chicks!

I don't have favorites. I love all of my babies equally. :love But seriously, I have had one from every brood strive to become the favorite, so there are quite a few of them out there vying for my attention whenever I'm around. (As a side note, I usually use the love icon for the pictures I find the cutest, which is why when, for example, Rangi flew to the top of my head, there was no love icon. )

Hey all! I am new to BYC and new to raising chickens too! I will catch up on the past week or so of this thread, so I know what is going on, but I just wanted to introduce myself!

My name is Melissa and I live in southern Indiana. I have seven beautiful six week old Wyandottes, three SLW and four GLW. So far, it looks like six are pullets and one is a roo.

Looking forward to learning more about raising these cute chicks. :)

Hi and welcome! I'M Em, also from Southern Indiana. I've almost lost track of all I have around here. Staying strong at 32 chickens, mainly because Husband has banned me from local feed stores! I also raise 3 dogs, 2 kids, a husband, a rabbit, and a cat.

I know this is not. Chicken related but does anyone know a home remedie to cure the cat cold??? Ms. Oreo has a cold she's sneezing and breathing weirdly any home remedies would help (if they dont hurt my cat) thanks
