INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Where is orschelns at? I have heard multiple people talk about it on here and before that I never new it existed. If it is not to far from and still has chicks maybe I can go get some, since rural king dosent have anymore. And it sounds like they have more exotic breed then rural king,, they just get basic chickens and rarley ever ever ever get bantams. Thanks
The closest to you that I know of is in Huntington. I was just in there and they are finishing up their chicks. They had cornish cross, australorps, and cuckoo Marans left. The only other chicken order they are getting is the Friday which is a bantam assortment. Then they will be getting in their guineas. This year they pretty much only ordered pullets unless they had a request for cockerels or st run.

Well today I was collecting eggs and Big Mama ( an orphinton that got her name cuz she's a grump when laying eggs) was sitting on a nest I thought she was laying an egg but I went out a couple mins ago and she's still sitting I guess she went broody. Right? But I have no rooster old enough to mate with her besides Mr frizz but he's to small to mate with a LF right??? Do they need a rooster to mate with them to go broody what happens when they go broody???
I am pretty sure that a bantam can mate with a LF. My chicks aren't old enough that I have to worry about it, but I've been told that it happens. And as far as I know, when a hen goes broody she stops laying eggs and gets very angry at people that go near her eggs. Beyond that, I haven't got a clue!

I know of a few people who had bantam roosters mate large fowl hens. It is possible believe it or not. If I think my hens are broody I put fake eggs underneath them(you can use golfballs too) to see if they are faking it or to see if they are comitted. I have had broodies that sit on the eggs for a few days and then abandon them(thats why I never let them sit on eggs I paid for. And I had another broody that just couldn't make up her mind. She would sit on them a few days and then not for a few days back and forth. I took away her eggs (she would growl.. yes growl when laying on them). Then any time someone layed an egg she would lay on them. She is a little odd, but has huge personality.

I know there is Orschelns in Seymour and a small town west of Bloomington. Here's the link for Indiana locations. http://www.orschelnfarmhome.com/ede...nurl=control/StoreLocatorMap.vm&ctl_nbr=16754

Hope this helps.

O, well I may go next year. I am not really interested in any of those. Maybe the bantams, but I dont know if it worth the tripo just for a few bantams. Thanks

But speaking of guineas does anyone here have any experience with vulturine guineas? ( I think that's what they are called? Bf seen a picture of them and now wants some. I have read about them but like to hear from people who has kept them.

Thanks for the offer, but it's 100 miles round trip to your house and I didn't really want a RIR. Just took it from my granddaughter because she was afraid of it. He was very aggressive. That's why he wasn't put in the chicken yard or house. He would have killed all the younger ones.

Also I have several young roosters that will be joining freezer camp in a couple of months.

Butchering chickens is not hard to do. A bit gruesome for people who haven't done it and plucking the feathers can be tedious, particularly if the scalding water is not hot enough. If you have ever cut up a whole chicken from the store, you have a head start.

Here's a youtube instruction video.

We always had a chopping block and a hatchet, but for the first-timer occasionally doing this, a good sharp butcher knife is more likely to work well. Hatchets can be inaccurate.

Note that in addition to feathers, chickens also have hairs on their bodies. Use a propane torch to burn them off. You can use your gas stove if you don't mind your house smelling like burnt hair for a few hours.

I know how much you stressed over finding the "right ones"!.
Thank you! When we checked the chicks this morning, the Jubilee gained a tail! Yesterday she was a ball shape and today she has several tail feathers.
