John, I am truly sorry to hear. We are fighting wildlife like mad too, I had my 8 young copper maran wiped out last night, appears to be raccoon. Seen a gray fox take one on my Lavenders in broad daylight less than 30 feet from me! I am beside myself with anger!!! I am setting snares, everything I can to remove the foxes, DH is hooking up video cams for the coop. All out war! I am just sick over my marans. They were the sweetest birds, and I will get the coons that have done it. I had a young BR hen in with them, and she somehow survived the attack. She is in the house until I can protect the babies better. Time to rebuild the grow out pen too.Rest in Peace ----- Rooster Cogburn 2012 - 6/4/2013
Please remove your hats and bow your heads for a moment of silence in remembrance of Rooster Cogburn. He was a valiant and intrepid member of the neighborhood, loved and respected by (almost) all.
He met his demise by being viciously attacked and murdered by a pack of coyotes during the night while he slept on his usual roost in the barn. When his owner went out to the barn and found red feathers scattered around near Cogburn's roost he then took the ATV out into the field and found a bunch more feathers and one foot.
D*mn! He was an ornery old cuss, but I liked him. Shirley, 4 houses down will be heart-broken. She had adopted him, fed him so much that he never ate anything here.
I bought 2 more live traps and have set them up in the barn with a chunk of chicken meat under the trip pads. If I catch some, I'll let you know. They will be given a fair and impartial trial before being found guilty and sentenced to death. I intend to give them pistols with one bullet and let them do the honorable thing, the murdering b*stards.
John
Not really. You just have to flip eggs 2-3 times a day, regulate temp and humidity. When you go inot lock down you will have to raise the humidity and just watch the temp to make sure it stays 99.5 f. That is basically a really short crash course you can find tons of info on BYC and the internet (youtube helps a lot), I bought my own bator because I didntt want to screw it up, but I have heard it is really cheap and easy to builg your own. There are a llot of things on Byc and youtube about how to do it and the materials needed. All of these hatches are making me anxious to try it myself. Is it hard to incubate? And do I need to pick up an incubator at the store, or is it possible to make one easily/cheaply? I work from home so I wouldn't need an egg turner, can just take a quick break and go turn them myself. Got a few more months before my chicks will start even laying eggs though. Can't wait!

Well she came back acting just like before. As I said they've been free ranged always so they aren't used to being handled. I moved the rack they've been roosting on at night into my mudroom (its an exit to the dog yard) and once they started tucking themselves in on a flower pot on the porch, After laying down plastic tarping and getting their food moved, i was able to get the other hen picked up And moved to the new location. Thankfully the rest followed (minus the two that seem to be lookouts on the back deck). I will try to inspect her in the morning before I let them outside. I can't believe I have chickens in the mudroom but its better than seeing my son cry again. Thankfully my husband agrees. I'm thinking that maybe it was just too dark for my dG to see well and it could have just been the other one in the coons mouth. I just don't know.
Good night all!!!
