INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I was reading that if you breed 2 diffrent breeds of chickens together any female offspring will look like the father and male offspring will look like the mother. Is this true? I have 3 Old English roos. 1 may be a silver duckwing the other 2 iv not been able to figure out yet. ( they could be " mixed color wise?) But my Antwerp D'anver hen hatched 3 chicks any one of the 3 roos could be the father. 2 chicks look identical except for the top of their heads 1 has a strip of dark brown with a dark brown dot on each side the other has a strip no dots. The 3rd is a completely different color looks nothing like the other2. I'm wondering different daddys maybe?

I woke up today to an owl attacking my BLRW. He did not make it. We tried and tried to get him in the coop last night but he was acting as if the coop scared him. I thought he was scared of the other roo and their differences could be worked out today after a night away. So around 11 last night well after dark we gave up on getting him to go inside.

Now that the owl has killed one of our chickens will it ever go away?

Not until all the chickens are gone or he contracts a bad case of lead poisoning. Don't actually do that. There are severe penalties for being caught killing a raptor.

Your only hope is to make sure everyone is inside by dark. I check every night to ensure no one is trapped outside after the automatic door goes down at 9:30 PM and doesn't open until 8:00 AM. I don't open it earlier because sometimes owls will hunt late (for them).

About 35 years ago, I lost 50 pheasants to an owl before I found out what was doing it and discouraged him. Then a 2nd owl started raiding chickens during the early morning until I discouraged him. Between the two, the nearly cleaned me out.

When free ranging chickens, you will have losses. Not much you can do about it. Owls, hawks, weasels, coyotes, foxes, etc.

Good luck.

John

Ok. I just had a single Crested Cream Legbar hatch. I don't think I am going to get anything out of the other 6 eggs unfortunately.

Soooo, does anyone near Indy have any newly hatched chicks they would like to sell? I don't want to raise one alone.

Please let me know.

Oh and here is a pic of the newbie. Have to wait until it dries out until I can tell if it is a boy or girl.

If your husband is looking for more pallets, I saw some very nice looking ones on North Main Street at the paint store just the other night. They were sitting next to the dumpster, so I'm pretty sure they were discarding them.

ok, most of the final decisions are made for coop 1.0. If everyone can stay healthy for the next 48 hours, build and placement will take place on Tuesday ( fingers are crossed)

so now more possibly stupid questions

I want to do deep litter, can I mix some of the sevin dust into it to keep pest insects out? I think this sounds something like what John did by rubbing it on
the birds

Also tyring to rememebr who had pics of the rainwater runoff system, I wanted to know if I can use that Idea

thanks

I think the rainwater system you are referring to was mine. No need to ask permission, the idea is cobbled together from lots of other posts here and elsewhere on the internet. I'm actually working on waterer 2.0 now. planning on trying the cups instead of the nipples since I have heard that Turkeys will not use the nipples and mine are almost big enough to join the chicken flock.

Quote: Thanks, This owl attacked around 5:30 am. I had not even seen or heard any owls around here. But this one is large to giant size. Bigger than the hawks. DH and I will do better at making sure every one is up for the night. Most times my chickens are not free ranged except the roosters when I am not collecting hatching eggs.

I should have a few sometime between Thursday night and Saturday morning. Most likely not soon enough. But let me know if you want some then. They are $2 each.

So sorry about the owl attack! I done have any advice to offer though.

Hopefully the others are just late! I had that with my rhodebar chick. The mirror and stuffed animal did a little in comforting him, but the new chicks worked a lot better. I was using a couple quail chicks but was afraid he would step on them or something so I got a few more silkie chicks for him. Hope you can find some if the others don't hatch.
This bantam cochin brooded well with its friend. After a few weeks it started dragging the bear around with it and sleeping on top of it.
Haha too funny.
so far i an up to 3 chicks. With more hatching. 2 blue ameraucanas and 1 black ameraucana. I hope one of the eggs left to hatch turns out to be a splash.
Woohoo! Congrats. How many eggs are left?
