INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Ha. I love my chickens too, 'sprecially now since they have started with egg production.

However, there are 2 roosters crowing in my back yard right now, and that was not part of our plans. Maybe I should record them so later if they commence to crowing for hours I can play it for my hens when the roosters disappear.
Now that's a clever idea-- a rooster recording!

Well, it would be nice to have electricity installed in the coop. They'll just have to make do this summer with their newly expanded water park. I even have a turtle sandbox full of fresh dirt (they'll end up caked in mud!) We have a swimming pool, but luckily they have never been interested. I guess they read the sign about No Pooping in the Pool.

OMG! Is that cage on fire??

We used a heat lamp last year to keep our water from freezing.  The light was aimed at the water not the roosting area at all.  The chickens were fine with the cold but they did need water.  To each their own.  This year I plan to look into a water heater but I make no promises.

I do use a heated bucket, myself, but I inspect it every year for any signs of wear and tear, it is always plugged into a heavy-duty outdoor extension cord, and I dust the outlets and cords regularly all winter long. I get what you're saying, but after reading about those things starting so many fires just over this last winter, I will not take any chances on heat lamps in my coop. I just want to make sure everyone is aware of the dangers, because this is scary stuff to me. Don't say I didn't warn you.

John, I was sitting here reading this while drinking a cup of coffee. Now I have to clean the monitor because I snorted coffee from laughing so hard. Thanks for that.
Note to self: Don't read Old Salt posts while drinking, lol.

You might as well drink while reading. I drink while posting. How else do you explain some of the content, typing errors, and general disjointedness?

I made a temporary section for the 6-week chicks. Then I had to catch several, putting them in a bucket, carry the bucket outside, dump them in the segregation area, and go back for a few more.

They did fine.

After a few hours, I took down the divider and let everyone sort it out. Some scuffling, but not too bad.

They didn't know to go back inside at dark, so I had to block the auto door open while I caught each one of the 27 and tossed their little fluffy butts through the door -- some several times. Since I took down the partition between older/younger, they for the most part beat feet for their usual corner of the coop. I had to do some sorting as the ducks all decided to join the little guys.

This morning, confused little chicks had to be caught one at a time and chucked out the door.

No real problems yet. I keep checking on them between projects.

I moved the six turkey poults to their outdoor pen; they have been ready for some time, but the pen hasn't. My plan is to keep a pair and return the other four to my friend that I hatched for. Now the problem: I read up on sexing turkeys and it's my understanding that they can't be sexed until 4-6 months. Guess I'll be feeding them all for a while longer.

Do hens display and strut? I have one little guy that is about 6 weeks that puffs up and displays just like a big 'ol tom. He even gives this little chirpy sort of gobble. It's really cute, since even all puffed up, he isn't much bigger than a volleyball. At least I assume it's a he. None of the other eight do that, not even the ones that are about a week or two older.
