precious!
Welcome to the summer of the broody!

I just pulled my uber-broody gold laced Wyandotte hen off a nest, where I then discovered she had been sitting on broken eggs and egg goop all day. She had two eggs glued into her feathers and a whole lot of nasty egg goop all over her belly. Needless to say, Miss Broody Wyandotte did not appreciate the hosing off she got after that stunt.

Meanwhile, I have a golden Sebright hen, Amy, who went broody right after I got her silver Sebright sister, Scooter, to quit brooding.

This isn't as big of a surprise, though, as Chickie, the 8 YEAR OLD Easter-egger who has never brooded in her life, deciding to up and go broody as well!

I need more broody busting cages!

Ugh, I think my EE is going broody too. As hot as it is, I keep finding her in the nest box. she is my only one so it stinks, everyone likes the EEs!

have you seen an increase in your broodies.  We have here.  I had two broody hens last year.  I have broke 6 and let two set.  Henny Penny above and a Speckled Sussex that will hatch in a two weeks.  it has been crazy.  and they have mostly bee young hens.  the hen I posted is 10 months old.

I have noticed more broodies this year than last year, but I think it has something to do with that awful heat wave we had last year. The girls didn't want to go into the nests to lay, let alone roast in there for hours on end brooding!

I've broken Amy once already, Scooter, another Sebright named Rosie, Raven Wyandotte has been threatening broodiness, Ani Wyandotte has been threatening as well, another Sebright named Frankie was doing the puff-out-growl routine while on the nest, and then there's the uber broody, Sparrow Wyandotte. :th I believe I posted this picture of her the first time she went broody this year:

Basically, my Wyandottes and Sebrights like brooding.

Sounds like you might have to send him to freezer camp. I know you don't want to, but sometimes it's the only viable option.
That's what I was thinking. Ill have to get a picture of this guy tomorrow. It's my rhodebar roo who is 14 wks old and wattles about 2" long and a comb that stands about 1.5". My other 3 Roos (2 several weeks old and one same age) are wonderful and still very respectful of each other, the hens, and any new chickens in the coop. Not this rhodebar roo.

5/16 if you want an extra tight fit. We could not get them in using a 5/16 but that is what the ebay auction listed for use. Then the 2nd recommendation was 11/32. That is what we used. it leaks very very slowly but we have our bucket outside so no big worry. I need to look into a better stand though. And my chickens are ignoring the nipples right now. They have had them for about a week.
Okay I am going to drill a hole in an old bucket first just to make sure I dont break one of the buckets I just bought.I am not going t use the nipple waterers until they go into the adult pen, but I am trying to have the pens ready(building on). Thanks

I had two broodies early in the year and havent had any since then. But I won't put eggs I buy under them, because I have had quite a few hens act like they are going to go broody. They go through golf balls and everything and after they have the eggs a few days they decide they dont want to be broody anymore. So all they get to lay on are the eggs from the coop.

Hello! I'm in West Lafayette and am looking for a coop for my very small, residential backyard. I'm a master gardener and am excited to add chickens to my productive backyard...but first I need a coop.
