INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I was sad that my lil hatch project didn't work out (I still have one in the bator but day 23 is just about over so I'm not holding out much hope) so I went out and found myself four 2 week old chicks. I adopted! Lol One RIR, two partridge Plymouth rocks, and one BR. They are all girls... I figure I NEEDED them to fix my roo to hen ratio. Needed them... Right? Lol I started the season with five birds now I have more than 20 - we will just leave it at that. ;)

Darthlayer- I'm really sorry. I just hate having a sick bird especially when I'm not sure how to treat her. Have you isolated her yet? Keep us posted. I hope she gets better.

Darth Layer~ Since I unfortunately have an invalid chicken with a torn tendon, I've read that Poly Vi Sol vitamins without Iron should help a sick chicken in general. It's similar to giving Sav-a-Chick electrolytes as a basic aid --You can also use 50% gatorade (or similar product--no caffeine) and 50% water.

The following may have nothing to do with your chicken, but it mentions problems walking . . .

We have at least a dozen people signed up for Poultry Fest. I had someone ask me today if anyone else who is coming is into Silkies, as they are her favorites. I don't have any myself but I'm sure with the popularity of Silkies, others who are attending have them. I know that Janet (Jchny2000) has a lot of birds of many types and varieties.

And others who are coming are all over the map as far as experience, breeds kept, and how they approach chicken keeping.

So that made me think? Those of you who are coming, what are you excited about?

What do you hope to learn? See? Do? I personally just want to meet as many 'Chicken Folk' as I can, talk shop, and make friends and contacts.

I am hoping my chicken journey is long and enjoyable, so meeting like minded people who are sailing on the ship along with me is top on my list. And meeting people who can make my chicken math worse isn't such a bad thing either.......

And for those of you who can't make it, we'll see how it goes, but the thought of an annual event is noodling around in the back of my (admittedly porous) mind.......

vickichicki~ My EE lays the largest sized, most beautiful eggs with the biggest yolks. Just give yours a little time.
Btw, (Queen) Victoria ~ Congrats to you and your country for the exciting news of the new heir to the British throne! My English Jubilee is jubilant.

CRSelvey~ Me, too! At the beginning, I liked chickens that look like chickens are supposed to look (my childhood books were the source of my chicken knowledge- haha). If I had more room, I'd have a couple of Silkies and other breeds, but there still are some breeds that are just scary to me-- like the man-bird.

kabhyper~ You know I love your arty rooster Gus! And now he has such a swanky red comb-- haha. He seriously should be on a magazine cover.
CCHHICKINS~ While researching in my chicken health book, I noticed that a possible cause of chick born with intestines outside of abdomen (I'm thinking one of yours was like this) is "High temperature during mid-incubation."

Someone that I am friends with that also raises chickens said that it was infact a hernia. It was on its butt and didnt look like intestines. It died a week or so ago. Thanks though

. Cocky, that one. He is very pretty. I will get a classic rooster pic of him sometime. He tries to boss my camera around by wig dancing and shuffling his feet at it

hello everyone, i have been fluttering around behind the scenes reading posts but not doing much posting. We had a death in my boyfriend's family last week so it has been hard to keep up with all the posts, but i did it! Not much has happened here accept all 3 of my oldest hens are now laying and we are getting 3 eggs everyday, which is surprising given the heat the past couple of weeks. Had to have an omlet tonight just to keep inventory down!

In response to Racin-- I just would like some chicken folk company!! I talk chicken on a regular basis to people who are not infected with the "chicken disease" like i am (aka my DBF,co-workers). I have done some educating of my co-workers so as to spread awareness of what chicken keeping can be like. But most people that i talk to are not "chicken people" like everyone is on here. It would just be nice to talk "chicken talk" with like minded peeps! (no pun intended!)

I would really like to discuss fermenting of the feed if we have time. I am a hands on person, and I have tried reading websites for pointers, but it would be nice to get advice face-to-face from people who have been doing it.

Also maybe we can swap egg recipes? (i have very little egg recipes and in need of some good ones!!)

I can not wait for Chicken Fest 2013 and I am waiting anxiously for Sunday to come!!!!
