Ok I should know now that you are all so much better at chickens than me but I was hoping you were wrong about my barred rocks both being cockerels. Well I showed the picks on a barred rock thread today and got schooled. He was more wordy than old salt but just as straight forward in telling me there is no chance of a girl. So I have to change my signature again!!! 2 girls and seven boys. I'm dispatching two on Sunday but are the others guaranteed to fight? Is there a chance that they will remain on good terms with each other? Otherwise they are going to freezer camp too.
 
Hello All. How has everyone been? Its been crazy here. My flock size is way down right now. I am getting ready to redo things around here and start building my flock back up. Our garden is doing great. The rain we had this year makes the weeds and grass grown up in no time and have a hard time keeping them pulled. I slowed down on incubating but here soon I will start back up on that. I hope everyone is doing great. I hardly have any time to get on the internet. I do visit this site on my phone tho so if anyone has any questions or wanna talk just send me a message on here. I know this thread loves pictures so I will have to get some soon for you all.

You got to love chicken math! not even a week ago I bought seven chickens and today I got 4 more! I will post pics of them later, theu are pretty and i might post some more pics of mu brown leghorns, just because i like them. dont tell the other chickens but they are probably my favorites.

Thanks for taking them. I'm going to miss them, but need to focus more on breeds I want to work with.

I've had roos that were not brooded together get along just fine and also had it where roos that were together since hatch get aggressive towards each other. Just depends on the individual roosters,from what I've found.
 
Got a run built and another hole cut in the coop so now another pen has access to the outdoors. Right now the tolbunt pair and naked neck pullets are in that pen and run. They sure did enjoy getting outside!

I'm looking forward to seeing what the offspring from these tolbunt look like. The roo doesn't have enough black and the pullet has too much black. Hopefully it works out to were the chicks get equal amounts of the color genes from each chicken lol.

Does anybody know anything about rose comb brown leghorns? All the info I have found did not anwser my question. If you breed a brown leghorn with a brown leghorn (both rose comb) will you get 100% rose comb brown offspring? I just assumed you would, but I also assumed that if you bred a blue ameraucana with a blue ameraucana you would get all blue offspring and that is definatly not the case. Thanks

I majored in Biology in college, and genetics was one of the areas that fascinated me. I just wish I'd of gotten into chicken genetics then.

As far as Rose Comb goes, it is a Dominant gene. But.....as I said before with Barring, it's complicated. If you want to geek out on it, here is a great BYC article on comb genetics

But, for those that don't want to get in the weeds, here is the short answer: Maybe.

There are places all over the web that have this info, including threads on BYC. But I'll put it here for those that don't want to search.

First off, Unlike feather barring, neither Comb type nor Blue Feathering are sex linked genes, so it doesn't matter for any pairing which (male or female) has the traits in question.

Since Rose Comb is Dominant, you only need one copy of the gene to express the trait. That means that each of your Leghorns could have both genes Dominant (Homozygous) or One Dominant and one recessive. (Heterozygous).

Here are your combos and possible results:
Both Leghorns are Homozygous - All Rose Combs, and if you bred the offspring together or with either parent, always Rose Comb.
One Homozygous and one Heterozygous parent: All Rose Combs. But any subsequent pairing would have a chance to have single comb offspring.
Both Heterozygous parents: 75% Rose Comb, 25% single comb.

Blue Feathering is even more fun as Black is incompletely Dominant. This means that unlike combs, when a bird is heterozygous, it shows a coloring (Blue) that is neither the Dominant (Black) or the recessive (splash). If you have Blue birds, you can be confident they are heterozygous (one Black gene and one Splash gene).

Here are your combos and results for Black/Blue/splash
Black x Black = All Black
Blue x Blue = 25% Black, 50% Blue, 25% splash
splash x splash = All splash
Black x Blue = 50% Black, 50% Blue
Blue x splash = 50% Blue, 50% splash
Black x splash = All Blue

This kind of confused me lol. I dont understand genteics at all and I suck at science, it was my worst subject next to math. I know the outcomes for breeding blue black and splash. But I guess I should of been more clear on what I was asking with the leghorns, but thank you for explaining the rose comb thing because I had no idea. If you breed brown to brown do you get 100% brown or will you get 50% white or something like that? Thank you
