I leave the snow on our small coop, but our new coop has a different roof. It is light blue and lets in light. The new coop works much like a greenhouse so when the sun comes in the windows or the roof it heats up the place pretty good. It got to above 45 in there this afternoon once I got much of the snow off the roof.Actually - if you have a good heavy snow cover it acts as an insulator so it should be warmer w/the snow on it. I always try to sweep the snow up against the hen shed walls to make an insulator around the base when we get enough snow to do that.
On the frozen litter - the poop freezes for sure. I have a little "kiddy" rake (garden rake w/metal head) that I go in and try to rake down to loosen everything up as well as I can when it's like this. Keeps it from getting too hard in too big a clump. Sometimes you can just kick down in there w/your boot and loosen things up.
haha! I think I have that calendar too but never noticed that.
Woohoo! I'd love to get a generator!e We have water again!!! Everyone in the barn is getting fed & watered now. Boy, times like this make you realize how much we use/rely on having water always available. I always worry with bad stormy weather, too, cause if the power goes, there goes the well. We really need to invest in a generator. I think the size we figured we needed for emergency power will cost at least $2000. Guess that's why we've been putting it off!
Lol, that is hilarious! My Fierce Hen I just have a few minutes before I have to leave for a meeting, but something funny just happened. The utility guy has to walk through the hens’ fenced-in area to read the meter. I happened to see him looking like he was afraid of my EE. I stuck my head out of the door and said that she wouldn’t hurt him. He repied, “Word is that one of them is aggressive!” Ha! I told him that they were just hens. I know what he’s referring to-- one time Nene, my infamous RIR, chased one of the guys down the hill! That guy thought she was a rooster!
Btw, still waiting on Nene’s piano. It has shipped, at least.
Also, I got a beautiful green-blue egg from my EE today! She hasn’t laid for a couple of months
They are all beautiful!I had to make time to take pictures of my babies this afternoon, of course! They are 7 months old today!Beautiful Ihi the Golden Campine:

Those alpacas are beautiful! I'd love to get some sort of farm animals besides chickens but I just don't have the room. All the chickens look great as well!It is actually sunny and not frigid here today! I got the animals to emerge from the barn for the first time in a few days. The girls found the sunshine.
Apparently a barking jack russell is extremely interesting.
The coop looks like crap, but it is staying warm in there.

I bet there was a nice aroma with all those chickens in the car lolWell, finally got everyone situated! Stupid me stopped on my lunch and got two bags of bedding, 2 bags of chicken feed, and a bag of dog food before realizing I wasn't stopping home before picking them up! Thankfully I was able to fit everything in the trailblazer but didn't think I was. I picked up all the 19 adult/subadult silkies, 17 silkie chicks, a pair of adult LF Cochins, 3 1/2 dozen silkie eggs, little giant incubator, 10 hole metal lay box, 5 gal waterer, misc things like boxes, bubble wrap, meds, heat lamps, etc as well as the junk I bought earlier! It was a FULL car load!
I was able to get off work early and they had about 30 mins of daylight left to roam their pens. They all cooped up on their own though! I did get some quick pictures and will work on uploading them later after dropping off parents vehicle.

always the practical considerations. How does one get that smell out anyway? It stayed in our basement for quite a while after we moved the chicks out and cleaned everything.
Haha. It actually wasn't too bad.I bet there was a nice aroma with all those chickens in the car lol
Nice additons to your silkie flock! They are all pretty, but I especially like your new silver roosterAlright, I'm embarrassed of these pictures lol. I took them right before dark with my cell phone. Uploaded to my iPad and WOW they are horrible! But I figured I'd post them anyways.
