INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

It is safe to use the USPS to ship birds, I have shipped and received. Not as expensive as you'd think, sounds like your PO didn't want to deal with it. Geez, didn't mean to hijack the thread....this is busier than the silkie thread and that is saying something! Here are a few pics of my birds...the grays came from the famous Donna McCormick. She had the best grays out there, had been breeding them for twenty years. The whites are my favorite though, and why I got into silkies;-)
wow! Those are beautiful! If you ever find yourself with eggs to sell please let me know! Or chicks/adults if you can ship.

I leave the snow on our small coop, but our new coop has a different roof. It is light blue and lets in light. The new coop works much like a greenhouse so when the sun comes in the windows or the roof it heats up the place pretty good. It got to above 45 in there this afternoon once I got much of the snow off the roof.
That's a good way to get some heat in the winter! :D

Will you cover it somehow once summer is here to keep things cooler inside?

Thanks Brad...I will keep you in mind. Which variety is your favorite? I keep white, black, partridge, and gray. I do have a very small bbs pen also. My blacks are kept separate from bbs. The blacks are tenth generation pure and originated from KD silkies.

Bad and Kab- love all the pics. They all look so pretty.

M2h- love the story!! Did he believe you or was he still scared?

Big night here last night. My neighbor across the road, house burned down. It's a total loss. She was at work and the granddaughter that she has custody of was at home. Apparently she lit a candle. They had a cockatoo , she was in the main room of the fire, endless to say didn't make it. They had to cut the power to her house so now there's no water for her other animals, chickens, peacocks ,pheasants, llamas and alpacas. What a mess.

Wow.

They remind me of Angora rabbits! You can play the game, Where's their face? with them!!

RE free ranging meat birds, this is a great article by a fellow - BYCer. And her video too :D Makes me excited for spring to come as I may try my hand at it :D
And another one of her videos: (For those that don't know, the white chubby ones are the meaties (CX).
Those are awesome videos, and mine were just like that. All I can say is give it a shot. We had a good time with ours, they had good lives. Making chicken stock today with feet, liver, gizzards and necks and the smallest bird. He was just a runt and never really grew past about the 7-8 week normal chick size.
Ugh! While I'm glad we only got about 3" of snow overnight, still a pain to care for the chickens! And of course I stepped on some left over metal siding and fell right on my butt while carrying out water! Lol. I was wet. Thankfully the waterers weren't very frozen. Just the very top, more like a thick slushy. Just curious, how well do LF Cochins fly? I'm hoping they aren't able to fly over the 4 ft fence. I didn't get the netting up in time (meaning I forgot to buy I have no clue on how high they can fly, but welcome to the "no fun sitting" club! Sure hope you heal up fast!

Man been there done that and don't wish that on anybody. I feel for them. Have them get in contact with Red Cross. They gave my family a gift card to to goodwill to get us started back up. Our fire broke out at 137 am so we left the house in March with Jammie's on. It helped a lot! Insurance money sure doesn't come in over night. Ours was complete loss as well. We lost a cat. I'm hoping the granddaughter made it out safely. Sending prayers their way.
