INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Wow finally caught up again!
Looking forward to the warmer weather tomorrow. Hoping to get more done on the fence for the cow and goats.
Ribeye is jumping, running playing and growing like a weed! I just love him

About the egg in the pocket, I now have a couple of sand buckets made for a child's sand box. I keep them next to the door for easy way to remember to take to the coop to gather eggs. I have more than one in case there are no eggs and for some reason or another I leave the empty bucket out in the coop or run. I got mine from the dollar store in the fall on sale.

edit ~ here is a link to a great set, you would have plenty of buckets to leave in easy to get places.

Oh, good idea! I have a wicker basket for the quail eggs but am always forgetting to grab it.
I just need to go dig more out of storage.

I'm so disappointed!!!!! The new chicks are supposed to be here tomorrow morning before 9 a. I just rec'vd an email from th shipper/breeder. The eggs are coming from Colorado, last night they were on Oklahoma City, tonight they were in Charleston WV. What's my point you ask.....the guy just told me he DID NOT add a heat pack to the box!!! What are the chances for day old chicks to survive that long without heat? Am I going to open a box to a bunch of dead babies? They were only a few hours old when shipped.

Lots of things to consider
Size of box, number of chicks, was any bedding added?
If there are enough chicks to fill the box well enough they will stay warm. But if enough chicks are included you may find out that a couple got under the pile and did not travel well.
Bedding can help the chicks keep their footing as well as retain some heat by creating an extra barrier.

I use a bucket too...just keep forgetting to take it out!

I think the idea of storing an extra one (or 2) out in the hen shed might be a good idea! Sometimes I have it out there and then other times I forget to pick it up when I go.

And...just after we were talking about egg in the pocket a few days ago, I got up from the computer, went out, gathered an egg then got sidetracked. Into the pocket, bent over and the rest is history.

It wasn't even 3 min. after having the conversation!

So how long from the actual shipment day has it been?
