INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Phew! What a busy couple of days!! The snow is melting fast here and I think my birds are really happy to be able to spread out some finally!

Jchnny- thanks for the compliment on my farm!

Here are the pics if my coop as promised!

Walking in. There's a very narrow area for my feed trash cans to the left and a small storage cabinet to the right. The first wall is a temp wall that we haven't got around to finishing yet.

We ordered our yard barn today. It's this style:

but will have only one door to make room for a window. There will also be a window in the back wall. They are planning to come out and assemble it on January 6th.

Great pics! What kind of netting did you use over the chicken run? I've been using bird netting like this and it's been working great. http://www.lowes.com/pd_376916-2313...L=?Ns=p_product_qty_sales_dollar|1&facetInfo=

awesome! Be sure to post pics.

Sorry about the silver blu. Is the buff looking one a buff columbian? They are cute, I love the mottled. I am going to breed some in the spring, just need to find some hatching eggs to hopefully get more pullets. And I have someone I am ordering black bantam eggs from in the spring.
thanks, yea she is a buff columbian. I love the mottled too, but not sure if I want to breed them. I'm needing more pullets as well!
is the blue with the straight comb a pullet? what would you take for her if it is? make a good Christmas present!!!
Yes they are already spoken for. I'll be sure to post anymore when I have some available.
Looks nice already! Brad
thanks!
liked your page, and what a lovely blue hen.
Thank you! I greatly appreciate it.
Thanks Im really eggcited to see how he turns out! (see what I did there) lol. Your cochins are really cute! Hahaha thanks for the compliment. I have heard it before, I don't see it, but I'll take it. :)
Haha, thanks!
Cool, I will go look at it and like your page. Are you going to make a website too? You can make them for free, it is actually pretty easy. I had a lot of fun making mine and I started with a blank template. I will not publish mine, until i get pictures to upload to it though
thanks! Eventually I'll do a website, but just sticking to the Facebook page for now.
DD just took pics for me! Here is my baby silkies from kab's eggs, and one from brad's showgirl eggs.. Black/dark blue? This lil one is from brads showgirl eggs. Its really happy to have siblings now! hatched 4 days before Kabs eggs.. Partridge? splash? So friendly and just too adorable :love
beautiful! I'll have to send you more showgirl eggs or better yet some chicks to you. They have stopped laying now though!
I came up with the name Happy Hoosier Poultry Farm, with help from a few others. And the slogan will be "raising, breeding, and showing happy healthy poultry". Sounds kind of cheesy but it works lol!
I like it!

Tomorrow is my last day of training in Wash DC/Maryland area. I'm staying in Maryland, but the class is in Virginia--an hour subway ride. 10 hour class, 2 hour subway rides, I'm exhausted.

The hotel has breakfast included....powdered eggs and turkey Canadian bacon are two of the offerings. I was going to take a picture of the pile of reconstituted powdered eggs, but they chased me away. If I had hogs and was used to real bacon, I would've been doubly offended.

Living in Indy, and having seen a few places, don't imagine I'm a country bumpkin. In Indy, the population is 33% white, 33% black and 33% Hispanic--the mix is awesome, I love it. I can order dinner in either Spanish or English, the coupons at my grocery store is in both English and Spanish. I feel very 'metropolitan' for a Hoosier. In Wash DC, the population is really mixed at a much finer level. Maybe there's 10 different ethnicities each at 10%. My inability to identify everybody and the different languages makes me feel backward.

I went to CVS for ibuprofen and a homeless woman outside the door asked me for money. I had no cash, so I told her 'sorry'. She says 'Merry Christmas, God bless'. On the way out, she asked me for my change. I told her again, I had no cash. She was very vulgar and gave me entirely different Christmas wishes....I was speechless.

I paid $12 for a tiny glass of beer...$28 for a hamburger and mashed potatoes, and $3.19 for a fountain coke...Thank goodness for expense reports.

I miss grass. I miss dogs, cats and chickens. I miss home. Just a few more hours and I'll be back on Hoosier soil. I can't wait!!
I always wished hotels had cats that you could borrow during your stay.

Thanks for sharing your experiences-- very interesting! It is nice to visit other places, but it's always nice to be home. Hope you have a speedy and safe trip back to Indiana!

I LOVE opossums. I have raised up and or helped quite a few over the years. They are neat little buggers. One of mine loved bananas...she would hold it like a little monkey. Most people don't appreciate that they are our only marsupial and have opposable thumbs. They are also very clean animals....except when mommies like the one above weave insects and slugs into their coats for babies to eat. Fascinating creatures. That said, I don't want them eating my birds!
Before we had chickens, there used to be one that would sit on the deck railing with my old Siamese cat who was a similar color. Since we've had chickens I haven't seen any, but I'm sure they're around. I always feel bad for wild animals because we invade their spaces.
Can't wait! DD is just so excited over raising them. She is probably going for SQ eventually, but for now she is just enjoying them.
For myself I just enjoy the breed, and really want broody hens. It will be a nice change for us, letting the hens raise chicks naturally.
We plan to let a lot of the birds raise their own, I plan to hatch my LO and the BCM/OE in the bators tho, and the pekin ducks too.
2 months and I am ordering my sportsman cabinet, can't wait

jchny ~ OK, first you say you're going to raise chicks naturally when you have a broody hen. Then you say you can't wait until you get a gigantic incubator!

SallyinIndiana ~ I meant to thank you for your input about the Christmas tree light tool. I had several sections of lights go out last night.

I've never owned a gun, but I am ready to buy one to shoot the rest of the lights out!!!!!!

So my quote thingy is being covered up by adds!

Brad- that's the kind of netting I decided to go with too. It worked great until we got some sleet last weekend and it weighed it all down. So now I need to go out and fix it :( it probably would have been ok but I have such a large area covered it just couldn't handle it.

Hehe! there's some, like the pekin ducks, that won't sit on their eggs. They have been bred for production, and lose the instincts mother nature gave them.
They have a shorter hatch time than muscovy so I will incubate them. Same for the quail, coturnix won't sit either.
A cabinet will increase my hatch rates, they are digitally controlled for humidity and temps, and much better insulated also.
Not sure if I will sell the styrofoam ones yet. If I do will offer up here first!

What age do you normally see full feathering? Mine are 8 and 10 weeks old. I would like to get them in before my rooster notices they arent babies. lol They seem mostly fully feathered. Pin feathers underneath everywhere though. They are going to be floofy!! They are used to the 73 degrees in our house. My silkies won't go out in the snow, so they are in their 16x4 coop and run.
You could put them out with a heat lamp. Otherwise it is just too cold yet. What I would do is take them out for a bit each day and introduce them to the others. That is best if you don't have a grow out pen specifically for them. Can you section off part of the coop for babies/grow out?

I love hatching in my styrofoam ones and only incubating in the cabinet. However, I think I will be buying another cabinet (likely a sportsman) and just hatching in my current cabinet bator.

So far my biggest section is about 12x24. However I'm getting ready to put up a 24x24 piece and also worried about it sagging too much. I'll likely add a post in the middle to help support it.
