INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hello Fellow Hoosiers!

New to the group and kind of new to this whole chicken thing. Have had mine since Easter, bought 10 chicks and still have 8(didn't clip their wings in time and my neighbors dog got two as soon as they flew the coop). I'm concerned about the frigid cold we have coming up, they have a really good coop and I have read not to give them a heat lamp. Any other suggestions? Of course they are getting more hay and bedding, just curious if there are any other tricks.
Also, they stopped laying eggs all of a sudden about a week ago. Is the lack of sunlight to blame, or is there something I can do to get them back in business?

Thanks much!
Welcome! Sounds like you have the right ideas. Lots of bedding. Try to make sure they always have water. The only thing you can really do to have them start laying again is giving them supplement light. (i never do).

I want to have Brad's lowes near me. Mine thinks clearance is 10% off.
My lowes is terrible when it comes to pricing, or they make sure nothing is on sale when I go in lol. Maybe I just don't go at the right times, but I have only ever seen three sales. One was a 6 cent drop in 5 gallon buckets and the other was a bunch of odd and end scraps of wood, that would normally be a few bucks, discounted to $1.79. The last was chain link on sale, but I never actually saw it in person just on their website. I think I just go in at the wrong times.
I think you mentioned it before, but I'm not even going to try to search for it -- what did you end up planting & where did you get the seed?

Sounds similar to us -- where in Indiana are you?

Lowe's should start paying you commission for all the purchases this group has made with your insider knowledge!!

We went to Tractor Supply and shelled out the bucks for 5 gallon heated water buckets for the alpacas/dogs and the ducks. DH will need to build a little platform for the ducks since the pail is a bit high for them. Hope the buckets work OK & then it's just the frozen rabbit water bowls and the chicken waterers to deal with. I did check for heated dog dishes, but of course those were all sold out (as were most of the other water heater gizmos). Our forecast just changed from a high of 0 on Monday to a high of -5

About 15 mins outside of Bluffton

My DH did not check the nest after I left for work this morning so I came home to two seemly frozen eggs. They appear to be intact - can I just let them thaw and use them?

Thats a personal preference. If there is no cracks I will, if they are my pigs or dog get them.
Or the chickens if I have a few, and cooked/chopped up. Had 2 frozen and broke this morning.

I know my little d'uccle, that is aloud to run around the barn, will find a new spot to "hide" from the cold. She normally sleeps in one spot, but when it gets really cold, she gets very creative with her sleeping spots. I am going to have to go on a scavenger hunt to find her lol!

I placed an order with Paul Smith today for 15 Ameraucana chicks ( 5 blue, 5 black, and 5 splash). I almost got some wheaten and blue wheaten chicks, but I thought what would I do with them, besides show them and think they are pretty. I stuck to the straight and narrow lol!

Quote: I can't stop checking accuweather! I am worried about the muscovy, all 4 of them are not minding this well at all. Even my big drake seems very sluggish.
I am going to be stashing critters everywhere tomorrow. They are a south american breed, and did fine last year. This has been harder on them already.
My 3 ducks (hens) don't get along well in confined spaces either. I may have to put them in the growout shed til the 0 and below is over.
Baby moo aka Ribeye seems to like the snow, he was a total goof this afternoon prancing around!
Tried to get a video and failed... did get a few pics.
Bo, sugar and sophie are not amused, and are staying in the warm hay.

Good choices! They are still high on my wish list too.
