INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I read that you use peat moss and wood ash in your dust bath containers. Somewhere else I read the dust baths should have equal parts of wood ash, DE, children's play sand and dirt (like what's in your back yard). What is the best thing to use???? I ran out of sand and my wood ash was still too hot t mix in so my girls got DE and dirt. Is that a problem?

I PERSONALLY don't use DE in my dustbaths or in my chicken coop or around the chickens.  Inhaling it can cause respiratory problems so I avoid it in that context.

When I use wood ash I also use it judiciously in a small percentage of the mix.  It's my personal belief that too much of it will also cause respiratory problems.

The only place I use DE is in my grain bags/bins to help keep weevils from hatching in the feed.

Again, just my conclusions and practices based on some research.

And if you're going to use wood ash, be sure it's NOT FROM TREATED LUMBER.

OH...and  I used to mix in sand too, but found that in the winter the sand was freezing solid.  I have a bag of sand laying around here but just haven't used it this winter.  I finally drug it downstairs in the basement so it wouldn't freeze!  May mix some in now and then but it makes the mix kind-of heavy.
Thanks for th info. Where do you by peat at? I've seen it in craft stores but that would be outrageous to try t put that expensive stuff in a chicken dust bath! The wood ash I use is out of my fireplace, I buy it from a tree trimmer that is local. No cut lumber used.

I love the winter wonderland pics!!! You have a great set up for your babies! I've always wanted to live in the country! Right now I'm about 500ft outside city limits, and have neighbors who wouldn't appreciate pigs, cows, alpacas, or goats! They love the fresh eggs from my girls though!
They would appreciate alpacas. They don't make noise, don't stink, are hypoallergenic, and poop in one spot, and all at the same time. :) We are only a mile and a half from town, but we are set back from the road, so it feels more country. You live in a really pretty state too.

@chick rookie Are you getting some nice blue eggs?

no I wish I was I don't have any blue egg layers yet. I'm looking for some, just aint found any that don't cost an arm and a leg yet. know of any???

I'm sitting at at an Urgent Care Center with my daughter Lauren. She finally made it back from Chicago, but is real sick with fever and respiratory problems. After hours of rain, it just started snowing as we left. I'm glad to read posts while waiting! I'll respond about Jersey this evening. Thanks for the responses!
sorry your daughter is sick. hope she feels better soon.

I just went into the den to check on my silkies and they layed 2 eggs. I guess moving into the house wasn't that stressful. My big girls layed in the barn today, and Blueberry the rooster learned the egg song. It was weird. He stands on one foot in the snow and never mounts hens. I think he thinks he is a hen.

Wow that's allot of colors, think I am going to need a new coop....... Honey..................:bow

Lol... If you look in the buy/sell/trade section on the forum, occasionally someone would be selling blue and wheaten hatching eggs in case if you need an idea of where to find some of the colors ;)

I'm going to be re-homing a bunch probably. I inherited a couple more horses and it is just too much for me right now without help :( I have pretty much reached my breaking point with this Apocalypse storm. I'll give them to good homes for free (don't want them slaughtered). Let me know if anyone is interested in:

4 EE hens that lay blue eggs
3 Barred Rocks
2 Red Sex Links
1 Welsummer
1 Blue Laced Red Wyandotte pullet (she is stunning - out of Jerry Foley's stock)
2 Black Cochins LF (unsure of genders - thought they were a cockerel and pullet but not sure)
1 EE/Silkie Roo - he is small for a Roo, about the size of the hens and is very nice (not friendly but respectful)
