OH MY sounds almost like a babys laugh! that is too cute.
Quote: I have 2 BCM hens I kept from hatches, I love their personality and color. They are very friendly sweet birds, you will enjoy them if you get some.
The roo I had was poor color, so I didn't keep him.
Should be laying very soon! They will have either a legbar or rhodebar roo until I find a maran roo with good color and unrelated.

So fodder was not a big hit with the chickens, but my dogs and cat like it lol!

wow, I am surprised! dont give up on it yet.. they have to get past the "what is it, scary, RUN" thing.
Its really good for the furry ones too! My pug loves the stuff.
I am waiting for the last of my grain, it will be spring by time I get started

So my stupid chickens, no I was not under the impression they were smart, decided to eat foam insulation while I was at work today. They pecked off a good portion from a place they have never looked twice at before. I actually did not realize they could get to it. I am really hoping they don't have issues because of it. They had plenty of food. Big dummies. Any one else ever had this happen?
UGH yes, all my birds do it. Styrofoam is a big favorite treat~goofballs!
My geese actually tore a hunk off my dads crawlspace cover, and were doing goose football with it!
It one tiny corner is showing, they will find it.
So far its not harmed them, that was over a year ago. Hopefully they will be ok.

Thanks for sharing! They all nice nice!

I wanted
a way to identify my bigger birds and couldn't find anything to use to do it. A friend suggested using the bands that kids are using now to make weaved bracelets. I have some now but I'm a little afraid of using them. Worried they will cut off circulation. Is thee an easy way to "mark" adult birds?

I have picked up some of the spiral leg bands from a local farm store. They are pretty cheap and easy to put on a larger chicken. I just struggle with the chicks.

Brad - I was also going to ask if those bands will fit adults.  I need to mark a bird or 2 and still haven't gotten around to it.

I was thinking of using the very small colored zip ties applied loosely.

On the tapes, you would use them in such a way that you fold the sticky part so that it applies to itself.... to make a band that neither side is sticky. Does that make sense?

These definitely would be too small. As soon as the band gets tight, you need to change it. I think I will like the rubber bands is I can stretch them to fit scissors to cut them off if need be. With the zip ties it's a fine line especially with chicks of getting them tight enough but not too tight so you can get scissors/side cutters in to cut them off. The spiral bands are easy for me to take on and off a large chicken.

I have not gotten mine to try yet but I did order wing bands.  It cost extra to have the numbers but I think they will work well as it is a put on the chick and leave it.  No forgetting to change those tiny elastics.  The elastics have to be changed frequently or the leg grows around them and makes them nearly impossible to get off.  I still have a bunch for chicks if anyone wants to stop by and get the bands.

I ordered the jiffy ones from here:

Does the band pierce the chicken? I guess I don't see how these stay on if they don't? Gotta go youtube them now lol.

If anyone is interested I have 6 hatching eggs from my Blue Self turkeys. I am selling them for $30 plus priority shipping of $10.
ohh the temptation! I really shouldn't as I need to get the rest if the chickens set up in breeding pens. Not add new breeds/species right now. But at some point I'll have to get some from you!

This girl has 2 different types of leg bands on, the basic spiral band that's white and then the red numbered bandette. I will likely get some if the numbered style too. The simple spiral bands are nice to quickly tag for culling, something to watch for on a specific chicken, or keep track of a certain hatch as a group but the numbered is a lot easier to keep track of individual chickens as you have two different identifiers on each band (color and number).

jchny ~ Did your Dad have his surgery?
Not yet, we are all but waiting next to the phone for the call. The wait is really hard for him, he is not an idle man...
One dr thinks it will be very soon, the other is saying 6 months.
He had a call from the symphonic choir (he is a tenor in the group) And he said yes if he is able

At 80, I want him to do the things he loves, and still can! But I told him he is NOT allowed out in these temps.
This was very dangerous for elderly and heart patients.... everyone for that matter!

I am not a fan of the spirals at all. I have had troubles with them. I have never put any bands or anything on my chickens, but ones I have bought from shows sometimes come with them on, from their previous owners. When I went to lebanon I had 5 or 6 of the chickens I bought wearing these. 4 were way too tight. I take all of the legs bands off regardless. I will eventually use leg bands or toe punches, once I can't keep track of everyone by memory lol
