Has anyone ever bought chicks from akers hatchery in Salem, IN?

I looked into it but I think the chicks were straight run production chicks that I was looking at. At that time I decide to spend the money on starting up my heritage flock instead. I have since ordered production chicks when I get news of a special for a hatchery. Meyer has some nice production red stars, but I'm not sure how much they end up being with shipping. You might be able to save by picking up from Akers.

We burn with wood so I can certainly do that!!! I sprayed them with Adams flea spray but I like the ash idea better. Maybe I can make a dusting place for them. They haven't dusted in a week because of the weather. I am sure they would love it!!!

do you have any pictures of your turkey coops. I'm getting 3 in the spring, order placed a while back. I'm trying to image and design what I will need for a max of 3 turkeys. I'm thinking they need the same stuff as chickens but more space, larger nests, more head space between roosting and venting.

Mine

My turkeys are in with my chickens in the coop. Nothing special. She does love to lay in a small dog house we have beside the coop. It was originally for our ducks but they don't like it. She lays there faithfully every day. It is just a basic plastic dog house you can buy at Rural King or Tractor Supply. This spring we are going to build a much larger coop with one side for chickens then separate stalls for 3 different breeds of turkey. We have the Blue Self and are getting Sweetgrass and Bronze Tiger this coming May from Porters. In the turkey stalls we are going to put only 2 roosting rungs farther apart and down lower from the ceiling than the chickens. (The chickens get stadium seating) This will allow more head room and flight space. Right now my Tom almost crashes into the nesting boxes in the coop each morning. I know he will appreciate it. My hen roosts on top of the coop if it is above freezing. I am sure she likes the peace and quite at night lol!

I'm excited to be getting these warmer temps. I hope it melts all the snow in the pens so I won't have to shovel them out. They are FULL of snow.

There is a snow wall blocking most of the access to my chicken's run right now. Not that they care, they don't want to come out if they see snow. But they will eat it off my boots every time I go to the coop.

What breed(s) are you looking for again? Are you going to breed them or show them?
I like the heritage RIR best, but then there are the cream legbars and blue laced red wydottes. And of course the blue sumatras are eye catching and useful as broodies.

All of that said, if you just want eggs, Ideal has a special every so often and their shipping is great. Meyer has great red stars that will lay dark brown eggs. Welps has nice assortments. This time of year it may be more about availability than which hatchery. Murray McMurray offers rare breeds.
As for finding a breeder, I recommend the breed threads on here or attending a show.
