INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hello everyone!! I have missed you all very much! I hope everyone's holidays were great! I think of everyone on here as my "extended" chicken family, and I am always referencing something from this website at least everyday!

The past several weeks has been really busy. Our family has been having a rough time lately and against my wishes, I had to re-home my hens to my sister, hopefully just for a while. I really love my girls and I miss them everyday. With everything that has been going on it was just getting a little much to take care of. Things are starting to look good again though. My DBF is getting layed off from his job at Rolls Royce, but fingers crossed

he might have just secured a nicer, more paying job! So.....hopefully that means that maybe we might be able to really look for a house this year and move to somewhere that is a little more in the country mabye! I miss my red sexlink Big Red everyday and i miss her eggs even more! So now that things are starting to look up here, I'm thinking about getting back in the game, possibly with a different and bigger coop as well. I am scouring sites for BLRW and I have missed a couple of opportunities from here as well, but it seems that they are very, very popular breed!!!!! So keeping my eyes open.

All these pictures of all these silkies is really making me want to get some!! The only problem is that I can't really have any roos. But they look so cute and friendly!!!

I am very sorry to hear about everyone's losses this winter. I hope that you are able to find happiness again! I am still behind by one week in posts but I am gaining. I am glad that I am going through because I have gained some knowledge and I love reading everyone's stories and seeing pictures!!!

Miss you guys and talk to you soon!!!

Hey, Haven't heard from you in forever! Sorry to hear you had to rehome your hens, but at least you are still able to see them and know they are in good hands. Much better then selling to a random person CL. Hope you can get some more soon and they you DBF gets rehired or find a new better job!

Hey guys ive got a prohlem. i came home to check on my chickens and one is acting really weird. All the others run when I come in but she doesnt and its completely out of character. So I bought her inside and checked her over. She has a couple of cuts and scraps on her comb and her toe has a piece of torn skin. I took her back out per my moms request and found that im missing a hen. I checked the house and found a pile of dead bird. a coon most likely got in and killed my Baby. I'm really upset about that bc she was the only one of my birds that i hatched and raised myself but now the answer is clear as to why my other hen is acting weird.
I'm familiar now as to the symptoms and what will happen to her in a matter of days as this happened just last year to a chick i got out of a group that was terrorized by a coon and she didnt make. I am at a loss here and i don't want to lose another chicken that way. it was hard enough when the chick died thrashing in my arms I dont want that to happen to this one. I have heard that chickens cant get rabies but i suppose it could be transfered in this case, or she will get a blood infection of somesort. Please, please help me I dont want her to suffer but if there is a chance i can save her im willing.
Thank you so so much for any help you can give.

thanks Chickens!! I am anxiously awaiting the day that i hear the pitter patter of little chick feet again! It is really great knowing that I can call my sister or take a drive to her house if I am really missing them. They really were pets that just happened to lay eggs.

Did you check her over - all under her feathers - to see if there were any other wounds?

If not, I would be very sure that the coons can't get into where your birds are sleeping. Coons usually attack at night so you need to make the hen house secure so it can't get back in. That would be the first thing. They WILL continue to come back if they know they can get in.

It you can afford to do it I'd buy a trap and get rid of the predators in your area. They sell live traps at most the farm stores but if you relocate them be sure it's many miles away...I usually try to be sure there is a river between me and where they get dropped.

I had a hawk attack last fall and all the birds were very cautious and stressed the first couple days after it happened. I kept them in the "run" or "pen" instead of letting them out to run the property. They calmed down after a few days, but I think that being with the flock in a secure place helped them get back to normal.

Thanks, i did she doesnt have any others besides those and she is acting much more alert and even tried to run aeay when i checked her over just a minute ago.

Unfortunately i had to leave with my grandpa bc they didnt want me home aloje since I'm underage but as soon as i get back im fixingthe gate at the top between it ajd the roof. Itsvthe omly way I can tjick of that it could have gotten in.

It's weird my chicken coop is right at the edge of some woods but wildlife never has gotten in. I guess they think it's a lot easier to eat the cat food outside than to have to catch their food lol. I pet an opossum that was eating the cat food
