Strangely enough there is such a thing as mouth-to-beak resuscitation:

Yeah-- it reminded me of the segment in the PBS documentary when the woman's hen appears to be frozen, so she resuscitated it. I thought that scene (well, the whole film actually) was crazy when I first saw it years ago, but now I'd be the one resuscitating my chicken if needed!

Everyone be careful with the flu this year. I heard today my cousin who is only a year older than me, 37, died today from it in Indy. He was in an induced coma and on heart and lung machines. He was healthy before he got it. It's really bad this season!!!

Kab - I am so very sorry to hear about your cousin. What a terrible thing to happen, and at such a young age! My sympathies are with you and your family.

I hope everyone is taking seriously the advice to get a flu shot! And probably the next most important thing you can do is to wash your hands whenever you have been touching things other people have touched. Carry hand sanitizer with you; it comes in pocket size. You are all too precious to lose!

from personally going through this from having hyperemesis gravidarum multiple times, I would recommend a few pecks no more than 10-15 range and wait at least 20 minutes before repeating. I would wait at least 1.5 hours before offering a second type of food. Also wet is better if you keep the amount of food tiny as she will need fluids.

I think one of my EEs is egg bound

she hasn't layed for a while but she's been in the nest boxes quite frequently. This morning I found a yolk with no shell in the box she was in when I closed up the coop last night. Today she's standing around all fluffed up and hasn't hardly left the coop. Anything I can do for her?

So I learned a hard lesson this morning. Some one suggested I place a heat lamp on my broody and her babies. I did not for many reasons. Chief among them my fear of fire in the barn. As a result I lost two of my four chicks. The other two are now in the house and appear to be doing just fine. Kiniska ~ I am so sorry!!! I am glad to hear that two little ones survived. They will help you feel better.

racinchickens ~ We used a large aquarium (used to belong to our Bearded Dragon) for a brooder and it worked out very well. We especially liked that it was easy to watch Chicken TV through the glass!

I hope she gets her strength back. Broody hens are hard to convince to leave the nest to eat. I'm glad you got to her before she passed on the nest.
Also the little things get forgotten so easily when a crisis happens. And a pet getting sick is a crisis. Still if she does not improve at all in 72 hours I would recommend culling and investigating. For non pets I only give 24 hours.
Now M2H puts her heart into her animals and she will have a different outlook on the matter.

I found a Rubbermaid box to use as a chick brooder, a heat lamp, chick feeder and waterer, and cedar shavings. Now I just have to wait till spring. Saw some jubilee orpington chicks online for $45 apiece. Really tempting!!!

My advice from what everyone has told me and what I have read from books...it is NOT advisable to use Cedar chips!!!! It has some sort of bad reaction in chickens. Can actually be fatal for chicks. See if you can find pine shavings they are better.

It is really nice. Here's my newest episode of Chicken TV



The black chicks are Barred Rocks, and the Brown ones are EEs.

The tank is a 20gal long that I've used in the past for raising tilapia fry. It is set up on the bar between the living room and the kitchen. Should be good for a week or so until the chicks get too big for it. Then they are going into the 75 gal tank in the basement.
