I also enjoyed some time out with my girls today and I actually managed to get four of the six in the "tent" before leaving for work this evening. (Usually the four EEs want to roost in the tree so I can only get the two BAs in the tent for the night.) I am concerned about the other two, but they have stayed in the tree through similar nights in the past, so I'm trying not to worry too much. The bad weather has delayed my yard barn and I can't get them to give me a new date of when it will be set up.

He even delivered it! I was afraid that after the winds last night, her chickens would end up in the next county! [/COLOR] [COLOR=8B4513]To recap: Yesterday I found a blood smear on the shell of an egg where Adeline had been laying. Upon inspection, she looked like she had a prolapsed vent. Last night I was ready to bring her in the house and her vent looked absolutely fine.[/COLOR] [COLOR=8B4513]These are her eggs except one is a bantam-- Bonbon's. [/COLOR] [COLOR=8B4513]The ornamental grass bush where they've been laying.[/COLOR] [COLOR=8B4513]Today, I went into the coop and saw blood on a nesting box! I think the spots in the middle are like they were made when the chicken backed into the wall, maybe?[/COLOR] [COLOR=8B4513]I checked all of the vents and feet/legs/heads (injuries) of my six chickens and didn't see any problems. I didn't dig through their feathers (yet). My DH lets them out at 7:00 am every morning during weekdays, but because of the winds and cold this morning, he checked on them, but kept the door shut. So, they were cooped up until 10:00am when I went out. There may have been a battle over the two nesting boxes since they were locked in there. I don't know. The one nesting box had one EE egg and one bantam egg. The other was empty. Adeline and Bonbon are at the bottom of the pecking order since they are nice. Nice chickens finish last. lol The good thing is that typically when they're pecked, they don't even feel it because of all of their feathers![/COLOR] [COLOR=8B4513]If any of our Sherlock Holmes fans out there have any clues about this mystery, please let me know![/COLOR] [rule]

Ok this probably sounds odd and not very likely but perhaps you are checking the wrong um....ends of the chickens??? I noticed fresh blood on some of my eggs too and on my hens' backs, that had me freaking out!!! I checked em all ( which was probably more uncomfortable for them than me because being new I was kind of a clutz at it) and there was nothing! Then I noticed my roo was gettin busy with Magellan (one of my Red Sexlinks, and she had blood on her also. It was coming from Redmans wattles. He got blood all over head neck and tail feathers of most of my girls, who in turn got it in the eggs and nesting box. If you have any straight combs maybe chk them for injury????

Well here is the most recent hatch! 8 partridge, 7 blues (two are pretty light, may end up another color), 3 "oddballs" (one likely a splash), and 2 Marans mixes. I still have one egg that has internally pipped but not externally. Not sure if it will make it.

it was warm when I got out to do the feeding today, so this is what my yard looked like and boy was it great!!!! WARNING PICTURE HEAVY OVER LOAD this is the little girl that is giving me my blue egg I got 14 today, that is a tad over 1/2 my girls laying... YEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Re Racin Chickins Jersey Giant) Sometimes its something internal, and you will just never know why. Her size and development tells me that may have been the case too. JG's are a very slow maturing bird, and am betting a heritage bred will be slower yet. I have had some outwardly vibrant healthy birds do that same thing. Most recent was my only Brown Chinese hen WeeWee. She was a true pet. That was a very painful, heartbreaking loss to the entire family. I still have no clue why.

Ever since CRSelvey asked you about what geese were like, I've been meaning to tell her that after seeing your geese at your place (and transporting two on the "goose train" lol) that I just fell in love with them! They are so elegant and sweet. That's so cool how yours sit on your lap and are so loving. I wish I could have a few, but I don't think it would work in a subdivision even though our subdivision has two lakes (unfortunately we don't live on one of them). Every spring we see a families of geese and ducks with little ones walking down our road between the lakes. We also have lots of geese and ducks fly over. [/COLOR] [COLOR=8B4513]Btw, everyone talks about how messy ducks are . . . Are geese not as messy?[/COLOR]

Thank you. She was just precious. I think she had internal problems but do not have a clue what happened. No impaction in her crop. No sign of anything wrong. Just gone I have kept a lot of geese. She was just unmistakably precious.. She will be remembered and missed horribly. Paddy passed away the same day. We do not know why but the 2 always stayed together. I suspect both had got into something bad, a plant? Paddy was our first gosling hatched. This all happened while I was ill from the cows. Painful experience for all of us as the 2 were probably the most loved here! Its taken me this long to even talk about them. My WeeWee was a true pet. Geese are not nearly as messy as ducks, and definitley eat less. We are debating the pekin, very high feed volume with them! They are enjoyable and so funny to watch. But costs need to be compared... I may not have them much longer.

I'm sorry for the reign of bad luck you've been having! Burn some incense or have a Priest come bless your farm!!!! Have a ceremony to cast out the evil....SOMETHING!!! I hate to have my "friends" go through so much pain! Praying thing get better for you!

Mine didn't have it to that extent but I definitely think it was the wattles bleeding when I had it last year. I was really worried when I saw all those blood drops on that nest bar!!

M2H, if Bon Bon is still acting a little broody, I would check her comb for scabs from a scratch. Those combs bleed like crazy! If she was tucking eggs under her with a bleeding comb,they would get blood on them. Also the splatter on the wall could be from a good head shake with a bleeding comb.

Gosh Dangit!!!! We have beard lice on the silkies. Grrrrrr. They are still in my den, so I carefully poultry dusted the bedding, and their backs, because I didn't want to apply it directly to their faces. I hear lice is bad this year. I feel awful because they have been inside for a month now and I never noticed their beards being crusty by the skin. No crawlies that I could see. Vents don't have any either. I wish it would warm up outside so they could dust bathe.
