o bet kids weren't happy. the wind took my snow free zone area and made it into a open concept area instead. :he  Good thing it didn't snow!!
welcome aboard... I love mine, M2H does good don't she... :thumbsup

yes ours do. They have them every year, but they don't have many and was told if I wanted them it would be best to get there in 3 days after they receive them cause that's about all they last before they are gone.

Thanks, that is good to know.

Well here is the most recent hatch! 8 partridge, 7 blues (two are pretty light, may end up another color), 3 "oddballs" (one likely a splash), and 2 Marans mixes. I still have one egg that has internally pipped but not externally. Not sure if it will make it.

Dang dang dang! Lol

Over the weekend I found what I think was someone's attempt at an egg...

Coming out of one end was what looked like albumen.

Here's the new-used coop:

The previous owner was a teenage boy who named several of his hens after Jersey Shore characters, hence the Snooki and J-Wow painted on it.

Thanks for your thoughts to help solve the mystery.

minmin & Leahs Mom ~ I checked their combs/wattles when I checked over their heads, but that was a good reminder that combs/wattles bleed more than you'd think.
Kiniska ~I hadn't thought of the mouse massacre theory, but I suppose it's possible! My indoor/outdoor cats sometimes catch mice, but they've been more indoor than outdoor lately! -- even my Lionel boy, the one with the long thick coat, doesn't stay out for long.

I had a thought pop in my head during dinner (of all times

) -- vent pecking. I didn't feel like scanning the info from my Chicken Health book, so I found the same info online:

It usually happens . . .

The first part explains why I saw the "protruding part" (sorry) after she had laid yesterday, so that's why I thought she had a prolapsed vent. Later, there was no sign of it.

As far as the nesting box today, if one of the others attacked someone's vent and made it bleed because they were locked in the coop longer than normal, I'd think that it would still appear sore by the time I checked vents a few hours later. So, I'm hoping it's not vent pecking.

Very weird. Hopefully there won't be another episode tomorrow.

I'll check them over thoroughly again.

racinchickins ~ I'm not challenging your views since I personally don't know anything about Heritage breeds. I just want to tell you about a recent discussion when I brought Jersey to the vet the other week. I talked to the veterinarian's wife about their farm where they raise all kinds of chickens and livestock. She mentioned that they raise a lot of Heritage breeds, especially cows. She explained Heritage by saying, "You know, endangered breeds." She also said that they raise sheep, which multiply like rabbits. I thought that was interesting, and it probably explains why I never hear about anyone on the thread raising sheep!

Hey guys, does Rural King carry goslings in the Spring? Or would one of you like to swap ORP chicks for goslings in a few months? Not a one for one obviously. Maybe two or three Orps for a gosling depending on breed.
Kiniska ~ I think I'll just snag a gosling from one of the geese families that walk by my house in the spring on their way to the lake. Then I'll pick up my three Orps! hahaha jk

Ooooh ~ Just saw bradselig's Silkies! Brad, I can probably make it to your house by midnight! lol Wish they were easy to sex. I hear ya, minmin!

LOL I'd say that vet's wife has a very loose description of heritage. I guess an endangered breed could be described as heritage, since some people don't care about chickens and the breed as long as they are a good egg layer. Therefore, some rare breeds are heritiage because they are endangered since they don't lay many eggs. Another way man influences natural selection.

I'm more inclined to say it's a heritage breed if it has been recognized by the APA or at the National Poultry Association. Patrick did a great job explaining it, since so many people get uptight about things like this.

I am surely no expert, since I haven't even had chickens or been much interested in them for more than a year yet, I'm someone who thinks it's cool to have fresh eggs that are from happy, backyard chickens!

HouseKat~ lol about the names! Looks like you got a great deal!

About the weird egg. Here is a similar looking (?) egg that my Jersey (no relation to Jersey Shore characters! haha) laid a year ago.
I had her almost two years and she only laid around ten times, and they were all very odd results.
This one landed in the litter box under her perch, so it apparently kinda fell out.

Since yours have only been laying a couple of months, the weird egg is likely from stress (like the weather!). Make sure you are feeding them Layer food and keeping free choice oyster shell (and grit available). You should probably check their vents for any sign of problems. Holding a hen like I posted on page 2095 really makes it easy to examine since she stays still.
