INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Glad to hear it's just frustration talking. I so appreciate the chance to get a Silkie clan started I'm happy with what I've got here. Don't be upset about things that are/ were out of your hands,

Brad, There is no need to send anything to replace the damaged eggs. In no way do I hold them against Kab, she packaged them so well it took me 15 minutes to get to the first egg!!! Was definitely handling issues! I sure do appreciate the offer though and I'm sure Kab does too! You're too sweet! : )

BS! Lol. Send me your address. I can't set mine (lack of room thanks to Sally (LAM) and don't want them to go bad anyways.

Thank you leslea my issue is I've not ever had luck growing veggies and I'm not sure they are in the right locations. I have only one tree on my property as of right now so everything except raised beds by the side porch have all day direct sun. Is there anything you would change... I know I'm asking a lot but I need and appreciate advice. Thanx all!!! By the way my chickens have free range of everything during the day.
I am definitely not a master gardener. Certain vegetables are easier than others. I've never had any problem with tomatoes, peppers, or beans, onions, or asparagus (although they take a few years to be mature). Some herbs grow like weeds. Oregano, basil (plant them in between your tomatoes if you can), lemon balm (supposed to be good for chickens--nest boxes), lavender (also good for nest boxes according to the Chicken Chick). Lettuces are pretty easy, so are brussel sprouts. Now that I got all that off my chest I'll see what's on your list.

I've never had luck with strawberries. Too many rabbits. Squash grow like weeds and take up a lot more space than you'd expect. They produce like crazy, though.

Now, this will be my first year with raised beds, but from what I understand, plants do really well with them, so you might have better luck than me with some of your stuff. At my old house, half my garden was in the shade. The shade plants didn't do as good as the ones with full sun, but as long as you get partial sun I don't think you will be disappointed.

Hopefully some more experienced gardeners will chime in. I love the plants you chose. I would love to start some blackberry vines, myself. This year we'll build our run and raised beds (I'm only planning on putting lavender, lemon balm, and rosemary in them for now). Maybe in 2015 I can add veggies to the mix.

I know some veggies and plants are toxic to chickens. Trying to find a list about that, now where did I park it?

And I know one or two of the folks here on the board recommended putting hardware cloth down over plants to keep the birds from uprooting them, so that might be something to think about.

Oh, here's a list of what might be toxic to chix.

hello all from Whitley Co. How do we add the state to our pic? A little about me, my wife and I have golden comet layers right now and we are hopefully going to grow to around 30 this spring. Just bought a hova bator genius and I got three different hatchings ordered, barred rocks and rhode island reds for the first batch and then just ordered a dozen silver laced wyandotte's for april. glad to have found this thread...

Its amazing how fast the obsession can grab you. I barely had eggs in the incubator and all of a sudden I've bid on Midget White Turkey eggs that would hatch in the middle of my vacation......luckily, I got outbid at the last minute. So to counteract that small victory, I then pm'd the seller and told them I'd be interested in eggs if they ever have any more for sale. If I didn't know you all were a bunch of enablers, I'd be asking for help to curb the addiction. lol.

I'll just add a couple thoughts. Last year was the second summer for our strawberries & they are spreading like crazy. We also planted blackberries last year & I believe they can spread like raspberries do (a lot!). I would plant all of the sweet corn together instead of spread out as they are wind pollinated & need to be close to each other. Give plenty of space for your tomatoes -- plants look small when starting out, but they can get fairly massive by the end of summer. Likewise for your cucumbers. Either trellis them in some manner or give plenty of space for them to sprawl. I love my raised beds even though they are only 6" high. The definition of garden space is so helpful for me. Plus we have dedicated walking paths so the garden beds never get compacted from being walked on. Anyone who does step foot in them meets my wrath!!!

Here's a pic of my beds from this fall. The trellises at the ends of the rows are for my cucumbers. They're made from pieces of conduit with angle connectors at the top corners. I draped them with garden netting & the cukes climb up. Good luck! I guess it's time to get my tomato seeds sprouting for this year's crop...
