INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

My County has been without power for 4 hours so far! People are starting to get power back, but my house is still out!! Thank God for a wood burning fire place, the temp falls fast inside with sub zero temps outside!

lilmizscareall~ Haha  Funny magnet! I've tried being a vegetarian before-- several times. I don't particularly like meat, but I found that when I didn't eat it, I felt hungrier and was more prone to having headaches. I researched about the proper combinations for complete proteins and all of that, but I couldn't stick with it. If I were wealthy and had a personal dietitian/chef to create interesting meals, I could do it! :p

I could not kill any animal-- not even a cute little mouse. I couldn't because I was not brought up around farm animals or hunters or guns. However, I admire those who can process their own animals in order to ensure healthful food, while not supporting mass production livestock industries. And I understand the need for humane hunting of over-populated animals.
As far as killing-- Flies are a different story!
[rule]CCCHICKENS~ I first tried it non-cooked by putting in with the "granola mix" I made for my hens, which includes sunflower kernels, chopped nuts, stuff like that. They left the oatmeal on the plate.  On one of our cold winter days, I made cooked, warm oatmeal for them. I thought it would be such a treat, but they did not think it was worth having the sticky stuff on their beaks!  I told them that there were starving chickens somewhere that would love having Quaker Oats! :p
[rule]kabhyper ~ Glad you called an avian vet and found out some good info! Keep an eye on your Silkie! ;)

Ha! I really hope mine like it because I bought two big canisters of it. Surely out if 65 chickens at least 5 will like it!

When I give mine oatmeal, I cook it and then cool it slightly. Add yoghurt or cottage cheese and whatever yummy left overs that I can mix in it. Try adding some chicken crack, I mean scratch grains (lol) to it and a piece of cut up fruit. There's all kinds of ways to get them to eat it. Maybe that's why my girls eat it like it's going out of style!

My toes are cold just sitting here working at the computer...hope we don't get any power outages!

We actually want down a few weeks ago and bought a kerosine heater just in case we had such an event. On our own well, etc. so freezing pipes are an issue. There's a generator but it hasn't been used for more than 5 years.. guess we should test it out to be sure it still works.

CRselvey- we haven't had a group birthday for the girls, yet! :( The cousin that is a week younger than my DD is out in Omaha and then there's 5 weeks to the next. Hopefully some year they will be home around their birthdays and we can have a BIG party!! :)

It really has nothing to do with wether you were raised around that stuff or not. I grew up a "rich" city girl, with a very anti gun family and didn't set foot on a farm until I was in college! (I say "rich" because that's the reputation the city has. My family was not.) Some people just can't kill animals and there's NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT! So not criticizing, just saying that's not a valid excuse ;)

Maybe someone on here can help, I set my Hovabator Genisus up lastnight. The digital readout stayed between 99.7-100.1 and 54% humidity! I'm happy with that, now my question is. I bought a cheap thermometer and hydrometer with a sensor wire. It read 103 temp and 72% humidity??? Should I trust my Genisus over the cheap eBay thermometer. And does anyone have the Genisus and how reliable is the digital gauge? Thanks

I have both ebay thermometers and a genesis. I have found the genesis to be the most accurate or at least I get the best hatch rates when I use the 1588 thermometer as the accurate one. Some of my ebay ones are 2F higher and 5% higher on humidity. Others are the opposite. I place the ebay one in the 1588 and just make a note of how far off it is when the temps are 99.7 and humidity 55. Once in use for lockdown the ebay thermometer is consistently off so it is not a problem. But I have noticed that the closer to 70F the temps are the less wrong the ebay thermometers are. Another reason I put them in the 1588 to find out how far off they are.

Is your power back on? Ours came back on around 9:30 am. We are just north of CC. Where is Whitley county are you located?

Guys, Jumping on here really quick, my big brother Jack had a heart attack today. Open heart is scheduled tomorrow at noon, triple bypass.
Please keep him in your thoughts.. He has a heart of gold, and would do anything for anyone. will catch up once things settle down here

. I hope he gets better quickly.

CRSelvey ~ First things first . . .
About your cat Kiki's skin problems, here's a good link with photos:
Cat Skin Problems and Disease Slideshow: Feline Acne, Cat … My diagnosis (haha) is that it's typical allergic dermatitis. Your post about the rash didn't sound familiar at first, but when I saw the photo you posted, I had some flashbacks of one of our former cats, a female tuxedo cat who had a rash like that. The vet treated it with a steroid injection. Hope that's all it is.

About the dust problems in your coop, you might notice a few Feather Dusters walking around that you could use.

About filtering sand, re-purpose your Gold Pans! I mean, you're from California, so surely you have some, Shirley!

If not, here's ordering info:

About the seeds: Everytime I need to ask DH what he planted in the grazing frames (that still grows outside despite the weather), he has gone to bed.

Thank you for the suggestions! Kiki had a steroid shot at the Dr. and now has the Amoxicillin for 10 days. It looks like its starting to dry up and I could not be happier about it. I just do not want to lose another pet right now.

The Feather dusters out in the coop get really upset when I try swinging them around, but the Cochins would be good at it

. If Peanut Butter doesn't get to be more of a gentleman soon, I'm going to turn him into a duster! I was filling up his feeder the other day and he jumped on me from behind. Savannah has actually asked me to throw him away because he's going after us so much. I'm still hoping its teenage rebellion that can be tamed if we keep working with him.

I LOVE the idea of the gold mining pans. We actually did have many of those when I was growing up....my dad was a geologist for BLM, so we were always out doing stuff like that. I just need to build something of that nature for cleaning the poo from the sand. I have also been reading all of the info Leah's Mom has been posting about the deep litter does and don'ts. The statistics on it look good if I could manage it properly.

When I went to sleep last night a second egg had pipped. By this morning those two have hatched. They are still drying off, taking turns trying to walk and playing soccer with the other eggs. It looks to me like one more egg has pipped. I have to be out of town all day today but we'll see what progress they've made by tonight.
Good luck to you and all your babies. Its so exciting seeing so many people hatching out little ones again.

Well, here we go again. 8th day this winter of school closed...due to subzero weather again. Our school corp. has rescheduled makeup days for the first 6 but this week makes 2 more to be made up. On a brighter note, one of our news station's 16 day forecast shows that by Feb. 18 we will finally hit the freezing mark. Then it's a heat wave after that...a balmy 38 degrees by the 20th with rain!!! (and hopefully no flooding

)
Our kids are going to be in school forever this year (or at least they think so). Really looking forward to getting out and finishing some of the projects we started last year and this freezing weather just isn't working for me either, so thanks for the heat wave news

. If you had ever told me I would come to think of 38 as a heat wave, I would not have believed it. -10 this morning was just wrong.

Good luck to you. We found it really helped to cover the doors and windows with blankets using a staple gun to keep the room warm. It looked like a tent city in here, but it really does help keep the heat in near the fire. We also put it over the doorway to block the hall so that we were only heating the great room.

That is such a bummer when everyone lives far. I grew up in CA near all of my cousins and now we are all over the place. It would be so nice if it were easier and less expensive to travel with families. I hope you do get to have that big party sometime!
