INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I

I was/am very excited to be a Silkie Momma. I just really was NOT expecting this kind of a windfall! I am going to keep the best of the best but... Lol... Have to learn what that is. What should I keep and what should I not? Please, don't say keep them all, because I would you know!
My only piece of advice, is look for 5 toes other than that I got nothing! lol. I dont raise silkies. Hopefully Kab and brad can give you some more insight.

Keep all that have five toes on each foot to start. Then let them grow awhile. It is nearly impossible to sex silkies before 4 months or so. I only keep they correct ones. Although I do have a pair of blacks that I have become very attached to, even though they have silver leakage in their hackle feathers. They should be solid black to standard. Go to the store in the pharmacy section and get poly vi sol for infants without iron. Silkies need the extra vitamins. They can be proe to vitamin deficiencies. So I start all of mine early on them. It's a good idea to read the silkie standard. http://www.americansilkiebantamclub.org/standard.asp It is very helpful in knowing what to keep. If you have questions, don't be afraid to ask!

hanakimi ~ I'm sure you're correct! That makes sense, but Black Market seemed more exciting!

Hello from crazy Chicken hatching nut!
KAB: you will be happy to hear all 9 eggs are thriving and show very clear growth!!! Yippee!!!! I have a feeling though I'm definitely going to have way too many Little fluffy butts hatching though!
Is friend of mine went to her coop this afternoon and found her Broody Splash Silkie dead on the nest. After checking the eggs they were still quite warm so she called me and asked me to come get them and put them in my bator...if I wanted to try t hatch them. So guess what... 9 turned into 19!!! She also gave me three d'Uncle Bantam eggs (I didn't spell that right did I). I think I need to build a brooder before they hatch! I don't think I'll have an issue selling the chicks that are "extra" though. People round these part ain't never seen the likes of a fluffy little chicken like these here Silkies! Lol
minmin~ Hahahaha -- I admit that it was strange when I first saw a silkie chicken!
That's sad about your friend's broody silkie! But I'm glad you can try to save the eggs.

If they hatch in time, I'd take a couple. I'm down two silkies :(
I also need to add a breed or two to the flock and I'm not real particular as to what they are.

I just set 3 1/2 dozen more eggs because I didn't want them to go to "waste". I really need to be advertising the silkie eggs! Lol. I'm getting overloaded with chicks now lol.

Which reminds me, anyone interested in silkie or Marans chicks? Lol

I do want more LF, but I'm wondering if I should wait until spring. I love the two Marans I got from you, I'd like more, but am wondering if I should get them from someone else. I haven't done a stitch of reading on breeding, yet.

Woke up and got caught up on our thread. Thank you, everyone. Its heartwarming to read so many pm's and prayers for his recovery.
My Brother did have a triple bypass. Open heart. He was awake a short time, but horrible pain. (Watched Dad go thru it in 1986, things have sure changed!)
He did have a heart attack, but there appears to be no damage!

His Dr was so pleased. So now we recover. He is nearby, in greenfield.
He has several of us ready to take care of him once he is home.
Congrats to everyone on egg development and hatching! I feel for those who have been dealing with power outages too.
Its so upsetting to wake up freezing cold and realize your incubators are cold too! Congrats to everyone with new chicks coming, and delivered!
See some very exciting choices in breeds too, congrats to you that are saving an endangered breed
