PBeesChix~ Welcome to the Indiana Thread! I recognize your bantam roo, Oliver, on your avatar!

It sounds like your DIL's hatching fever has spread next door. What are you planning to hatch? Kabhyper's abundance of silkie eggs?

kabhyper ~ You have gorgeous animals! Gus is not a dork; he's actually posing with one leg crossed like celebrities do.

Got stocked up on hay today, thanks to BarbS. It was really nice meeting her and her BF Tony. Then I went out and got some pics of the beasties.

I Just love them all!

Hi, everyone. I'm looking for a decent brooding box locally. I'm near North Judson. It doesn't have to be beautiful. Just functional. Thanks everybody.

Tony

Up to 8 chicks hatched so far. One more has a hole broken in the shell and starting to zip out. Two eggs have no progress visible as of yet. Today is actually day 21 so several of them came a day early.

Spent two hours outside securing my run! Fingers crossed I think it is totally Starling proof!!! I put chicken wire inside the chain link all the way around the sides, and the bird netting inside the chain link on top. The bird netting was a lot easier to work with on top. It was not too bad out there, 26 degrees and sunny. It felt downright warm after the last two days!!! I'm glad it is done and I hope it works. I also spread hay over the snow outside and gave them a flock block and some scratch. It was nice to see them outside again! It has been a few weeks since they have spent any time outside! Now that the birds have found me, will they continue to be an issue once Spring hits? If so I have to worry about a pop door option for free ranging since I don't want to close the chickens completely away from the water and nest boxes when they are out. I have several building projects planned for the Spring and already placed a flower order! I can't wait until I can be outside!!!

Mr. Chewie (LF Cochin) was a champ and stood outside on one foot, chatting up a storm the entire time I worked :) Note Naomie (Easter Egger) photobombing him in the background

The kids. My heated waterer broke last week (I hate this winter) so I had to put a heated horse bucket out there, but Margo the sassy EE (the cream one) is too short to use it so she needs a stool :)

Harriet (Barred Rock), Sally Sitwell (Welsummer), Greta (Blue Laced Red Wyandotte), Margo (Easter Egger)

Woo hoo no wild birds! Well, I went back out to check a couple hours later and two sparrows had managed to find a tiny hole in the corder where I hadn't stapled well enough. I saw where they made their exit and put some more staples. I am feeling pretty good about the situation!

I love how your coop looks! Hope all the hard work helps.
I am getting the starlings again too since my run was wrecked by the snow

No time for anything right now tho!
check it out !!!!!!! check it out!!!!!!!!!!! it is working !!!!!!!!!!!

well pooo I cant get pic's to load... I hung pop cans from every place I could hang them close enough that they would hit together and make noise and swing in all the open places birds could get in through, and plastic bags like Walmart bags ect... about 2 ft from the top of the feeders, had to put old lids that I didn't have containers for in the bags for A LITTLE bit of weight. the chickens were wondering wtheck, but then didn't pay them any mine at all. I just hope the birds don't gt used to it...

They may eventually, but at least it gives you time to work on it more.
Fermented feed seems to lessen the wild birds also.

Oh I forgot to tell you guys something. We have been fighting with mice lately and after reading the comments about glue traps being inhumane, I started looking for alternatives. It's not that I wasn't aware but when I'm trying to keep them out of my kitchen
sickbyc.gif
or away from my kids, I just stopped thinking about it. My kids live here and the mice aren't supposed to...Anyway, at rural king the other day I found a four pack of plug in things that are deterrents, but not supposed to be hard on dogs or cats. I plugged them in near the two places I thought they were getting in and I haven't seen any trace of them in almost two weeks. I read that they will bother fish so they shouldn't be placed near but across the room should be ok. It's such a relief!!!
Glad you posted this!

Brother is doing great, but he is almost getting overwhelmed by all the visits.
We are checking in with my nephew but not visiting again until tomorrow evening.
He was moved to a room, and got several tubes out. He was pretty worn out.
I gently reminded my nephew his dad needs rest. Don't be afraid to say so!
And I know the staff is watching close. Thank you all again for the support

Had to get several issues resolved today at home with water lines, hay delivery...
I need to be 2 people at times. And my cell phone sound stopped working!
So I have a new phone. Its a Samsung Galaxy note 3. Really nice big display and works great!
(Same number of course lol) So I have even more options to share photos
big_smile.png

Mine was over 3 years old so I was lucky I guess.
I have several birds sold tomorrow and have all but my parent stock of GLW and EE left.
Really pleased. My egg coop is really bad, so it will be an easier transition for the flock.
Everyone will move temporarily back together but the LO and BA.
Then we tear out, and start rebuilding next weekend hopefully

Those are great I have used them for years!!! Little piece of advice though, they really bother chicks! Had t unplug two of them because the chicks were stumbling around n shaking their heads like they had ringing in the ears. After I unplugged them in my den the babies settled down and are fine now. I have one in every room of my house, haven't seen mice in years. Oh and Btw you have to replace them every 18 months or so because the mice get used to them and th signal gets weak after a while.

Thanks! That's good to know too. Do they keep spiders away too? If do I should probably canc Orkin. I'm not convinced they do anything anyway.

Let's Brainstorm!! I started thinking of objects around the house that could be repurposed to create a dome or cover over a coop door. I found this coop on the Internet to use as an example. I've thought of a few things-- some might work, some may not. An awning would be a perfect solution, but awnings usually aren't laying around the house!
Does anyone else have dome/cover ideas to add and/or ways to attach it?
1. Nail half of an old umbrella
2. Glue (?) half of a plastic trash can lid
3. or half of a cheap plastic bowl or bucket
4. or laundry basket
5. or old lampshade
6. or styrofoam cooler lid
7. part of an old lawn chair?

Hey Ya'll just letting you know for those that live down this way. Rural King in Bloomington now has a bunch of chicks in. RIRs, Meat Chickens, ISA Browns, Barred Rocks, New Hampshire Reds, Jersey Giants... and several other breeds.
gunchief ~ I bet they are sold out by now just from Indiana thread people who saw your post!
Ardizzone ~ Hope your pullet pulls through. I'm always so worried about stepping on one of my hens since they like to circle around my feet.
