I have 12 , so he could have a lady, but he is to busy standing at my back door waiting for me, and following me around.!!

Do Ameraucana's lay colored eggs or is it just the easter eggers that you can get colored eggs from?
If I was to walk into the farm store and buy Ameraucana chicks or are they mostley easter eggers and what is the big difference between the two breeds?

Ameraucana lay blue eggs. Easter eggers can lay blue, green, pink, white, and brown. If you buy chicks from the feed store they are ALL easter eggers.

Ameraucanas have:
slate legs
come in 8 accepted colors (blue, black, white, buff, brown red, silver, wheaten, and blue wheaten)
beard and muffs

Easter eggers have:
just about any color leg, but usually green
can be bearded or clean faced, more commonly bearded
come in an aray of color combos

Easter eggers aren't actually a breed. They are mutts that have a common look

My plucker has arrived! So next Sunday, it will be time for some of my roos to have their 'one bad day.' If anyone in the area was thinking of processing any of their chickens, they are hereby invited to come on over. And if anyone is interested in learning how to do it, this would be a good time also. I would enjoy the company, and I won't have any more to process for at least the next several months.
I am too squeamish to do this, BUT I have a friend that wants to learn the whole thing. I might have roos to donate and I'll come along to socialize or sit any little ones.

Thank you for that!! I kinda knew EE were a kinda mutt breed. I just didnt know if RK or TSC would carry Ameraucanas. So it sounds like you get a surprise with the egg color of an EE. That would be kinda fun.

Yep, EEs are like a box of chocolates in 2 ways. You won't know what color they lay, until they lay it. And you could have two identical chicks grow up and feather out completely different. 95% of the hatcheries that say they have ameraucanas/araucanas actually have EEs. None have araucanas, and I only know of two that have ameraucanas (but just like any other breed you get from a hatchery, they are of low quality).

You have 12 geese or 12 sebastopols??

I would take him to the vet, just to be safe. I does look like a deep cut to me. If laying on his bed relaxing isn't his normal behavior, it is probably affecting him. If the I would venture to say they will give him 3-5 stiches.

Vet! Every cut my dog got eventually abscessed. Which just made the situation worse.
Ouchy! Poor guy, good luck with the running. I had a runner, as a teenager, and it was torture.

Thank you ladies. I will be taking him tomorrow. He's really uncomfortable now. I just wish I knew what caused the injury.

Akers Hatchery in southern Indiana has BLRW and Lavender Orps I believe. They said they would start having chicks in Feb or March so we are close.

PimentoPlymouth ~ So you're in the Terre Haute area . . . do any of our other members know of or will have any of these chicks available?

Also check our members' list for people who live in your area who breed chickens.
As far as your other question about chicks handling car rides, CRSelvey mentioned that when I picked up one month old silkies from bradselig, they rode with Brad and then with me for probably 3.5 hours total. I did put some cut-up grapes in their box in case they needed liquid -- I normally would have put a small slice of watermelon in since it has electrolytes and is easy for them to peck. I also put the seat warmer on under their box, and later down the road, I put part of my wool scarf in the box for them to cuddle up with. When I got them home and in the brooder, I mixed up some Sav-a-Chick electrolytes with their water and plugged in a heat lamp, and they perked right up.

Anyhow, that's my sob story. Welcome newbies, encouraging words to those encountering challenges, condolences on losses, and "awww" to the great pictures. Sorry to be so generic but the best I can do right now!
pbirdhaven ~ Good to hear from you again! Have you been on the poultry show circuit? Hope you can get your computer problems resolved, so we can find out what you've been up to.
Wow, it took forever to catch up with all the posts! So ready for winter to be over with! We have what, 4-6 more weeks?

My Einstein would like the snow to disappear! She makes me bring all the food and treats right to her her little house.

After a 4 month hiatus of no eggs, she laid a nice green egg the other day (of course when I found it, it was frozen and cracked). I am a little apprehensive in eating her eggs, just with the illness thing. I know she didn't get sick, but I really wonder...

So after seeing all the post about chicks at RK's, TSC's, etc. I decided to check my RK. I had to get some pig ears for the dogs anyway (nice excuse, right!!) and they had the little yellow chick foot prints all the way to the bins! I love that! They were about half out already. And I know I said I wanted some started pullets so I didn't have to mess with so much of the chick stuff, I COULD NOT resist!

I bought a BR, RIR, GLW, BO, and 2 EE's (which they had labeled Araucana's and I just laughed). I do think they went with a new supplier this year though. Even though its freezing out and it's really early in the season, the chicks just looked healthier than last year. Only saw a few that were dead and I found a trash bin for them. I, too, pick out my own and box them. I know what I want better than the employees. So I had to bring them to my apartment for the night before I was able to take them up to the farm. My cat sat with them all night and watched. She went from thinking I brought her a treat to complete amusement very quickly. She kept licking their heads!

Look at these puffy cheeks!

She's going to be a lovely EE in a few months! Only 4 months until I have my own fresh eggs again!!
amwchicken ~ Your pretty Einstein deserves room service after being such a survivor! I bet when the chicks get bigger, she'll be happy to have some buddies! Your little EE is so adorable!!

I am really happy for you to have a flock again. My three cats try to stay as far away as possible from my hens because they've been pecked on their noses before, and they hate when the hens gang up on them. When my cats recently saw my new 3 silkies and 2 orp chicks, they all bolted for the door! The tiny chick size didn't fool my cats-- they know a mean chicken when they see one! (or a gang of them).
