INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Chick days temptation #1: successful! Stopped at rural king for feeders and waterers. I was tempted to get 10 cornish cross that would have been free after rebate. Also tempted by the light brahma pullets . Regardless i stayed strong and only bought dry goods

Hilarious! You guys are crazy. I'm not even allowed in the stores right now. My DH will actually do the shopping for me right now if I even brought it up.
I had a visit to RK Martinsville and also came home chickless! But I have to admit it was only because they didn't have anything that I was interested in. They had black sexlinks, RIRs, EEs, white leghorns, and amber links. If they'd of had Brahmas I would have probably left with some. On the way out of the store, my DSO said we would not be coming back for a while....lol.

On another note, my first batch of eggs is in lockdown, and I just saw my first external pip and heard some peeping from the eggs! Second batch goes in lockdown as soon as I get off of my computer.

Big thanks to SallyinIN and Jchny2000 for stopping over at my place today to help me christen the new plucker. They and their DH's were very helpful. Sally helped me adjust the hatcher she loaned me, and Janet showed us both how to process quail. I'm very excited to try the quail she gave me. They also ooohd and aaahd at the appropriate places when they toured my new pens and runs. It is so nice to show them to people who actually know why they are built the way they are. My 'non-chicken' friends just look and nod their heads.

I do have 22 blue partridge brahma eggs in the bator. I think that is what stopped me. Plus I'm seeing some really nice quality eggs on eBay that I may not be able to resist. Ohh and the blue columbian brahma eggs as well. I'm really falling in love with the variety of brahmas! If they had bantams I probably wouldn't have been so strong. I really want some Mille fluer and porcelain d'uccles!

Congrats on the hatching as well!

we WILL be speaking about your brahmas when you have chicks or eggs you are ready to sell! You can put me on the list now.

My day started off with sunshine, clear skies and 50*! So I got out my saw, drill, measuring tape and building supplies... This is as far as I got:
400

This is my new Bantam coop, still needs hardware cloth and exterior perches but looks ok.
400

The "duck box"needs door attached and a small run fenced but has easy access to the pond addition from last year.
So what do ya think is it suitable??? Any suggestions? Other than cleaning the pond that is...lol... That's already in the cards.
Unfortunately by the time I got this far the sky was overcast it was starting do drip wet stuff all over me, not to mention the temp dropped 20 degrees in 45 minutes!!!! Was down right frosty before I got everything put away until the next semi warm day.... Brrrrrr!

M2H I'd love to meet you but I have such limited time! The trip is over 500 miles round trip, and my grandchildren (14&17) will be attempting to take care of my doggie and birds alone. I will be in Indy on Tuesday eve, and be picking things up at various locations Weds morn. They go t school at 7a so I hav t get back ASAP or my poor dog is going t blow up!!! Lol. Plus if the bitties haven't all hatched out I will have t be here t keep track of which ones hatch. My trip has been arranged and rearranged so many times I'm just going t play it by ear as to what time I get where to pick up what...lol. Anybody want to add anything speak now or forever hold your peace!
minmin~ I certainly understand! Hopefully we'll have a get together somewhere in Indiana this summer and you can make plans to stay longer. Have a safe and enjoyable trip! I love that cute little Polish from bradselig that lilmizcareall posted a photo of.

CCCHICKENS~ Your birds you posted are really pretty. From my untrained eyes, the Salmon Favorelle looks a lot like an Ameraucana (hope that comment wasn't offensive-- I'm not an expert). She is really pretty and sweet.

So I am making sprouts for the chickens out of black oil sunflower seeds. Also as an experiment, I am trying to make some out of scratch. I have no idea what will happen with the scratch, the corn in it is chopped up but the seeds are whole. Any thoughts?

That's what I've been sprouting with! It works. Google the Fresh Eggs Daily blog, she has a simple technique on there for it.

My only suggestion would be make sure you teach your silkies to use a ramp. They probably won't roost much, instead will sleep in a pile. They can free range but only supervised, they dont see overhead predators very well. If you aren't going to be home for the hatch, make sure your grandkids know how to hobble chicks legs if they hatch without their land legs. Some of my silkies hatched like that and I had to hobble them. Have a safe trip!!
