INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I want more and I sell the eggs and ( no eggs are not affected unless you hatch them ) I cant do that with this illness, if people were to find out it would kill my sm business. and I cant watch them suffer, this is a painful thing to the birds.
I have chosen to cull my whole flock. Not a thing I want to do but some of these hens I have a bond with and I refuse to see them go through this.
I'm glad you had it cultured to diagnose so you could make a decision based on what's really going on rather than just guessing.

I was just reading an overview of Coryza last night. It did say that it is not egg transmitted so if there are some of your current birds that you would want chicks from you could hatch some of them - as long as they aren't exposed to the adult carriers after hatch.

I can't imagine how hard it is to cull the whole flock and I hope I never find out. But I do applaud you for having the courage to make that decision as a part of responsible husbandry. Your willingness to take good care of your birds is an example to us all.

I agree, what a difficult decision. I will be on pins and needles for a while, Chick Rookie took some of my birds in early January so there is a slight chance my birds brought something in. I would have thought there would have been symptoms sooner (it has been 5 or 6 weeks), and I did keep some of the birds and they have not shown any symptoms, but I will be nervous for a while.

Chick Rookie I am so sorry for what you are going through. I agree with Leahs Mom that you should incubate as many of the eggs you can so you keep a piece of this flock with you.

I hope you find a way to keep your chicks and I will add my prayers that Big Man and Linus stay symptom free and enjoy their new home as pampered pets.

Big thanks to SallyinIN and Jchny2000 for stopping over at my place today to help me christen the new plucker. They and their DH's were very helpful. Sally helped me adjust the hatcher she loaned me, and Janet showed us both how to process quail. I'm very excited to try the quail she gave me. They also ooohd and aaahd at the appropriate places when they toured my new pens and runs. It is so nice to show them to people who actually know why they are built the way they are. My 'non-chicken' friends just look and nod their heads.
We had a great time and my children loved the dogs. I did not catch the dog names but my girl really likes the orange one. She keeps saying Orange loves her. It is good to hear the eggs are pipping and peeping.
I had a visit to RK Martinsville and also came home chickless! But I have to admit it was only because they didn't have anything that I was interested in. They had black sexlinks, RIRs, EEs, white leghorns, and amber links. If they'd of had Brahmas I would have probably left with some. On the way out of the store, my DSO said we would not be coming back for a while....lol. On another note, my first batch of eggs is in lockdown, and I just saw my first external pip and heard some peeping from the eggs! Second batch goes in lockdown as soon as I get off of my computer.
I do have 22 blue partridge brahma eggs in the bator. I think that is what stopped me. Plus I'm seeing some really nice quality eggs on eBay that I may not be able to resist. Ohh and the blue columbian brahma eggs as well. I'm really falling in love with the variety of brahmas! If they had bantams I probably wouldn't have been so strong. I really want some Mille fluer and porcelain d'uccles! Congrats on the hatching as well!
So many eggs, I'm still waiting on my most recent order of shipped eggs. I ordered 2 doz. I know mentally that they won't all hatch but still the what ifs are keeping me from even thinking about ordering more. Of course I have a few of my flock's eggs in my bater right now.
My day started off with sunshine, clear skies and 50*! So I got out my saw, drill, measuring tape and building supplies... This is as far as I got: This is my new Bantam coop, still needs hardware cloth and exterior perches but looks ok. The "duck box"needs door attached and a small run fenced but has easy access to the pond addition from last year. So what do ya think is it suitable??? Any suggestions? Other than cleaning the pond that is...lol... That's already in the cards. Unfortunately by the time I got this far the sky was overcast it was starting do drip wet stuff all over me, not to mention the temp dropped 20 degrees in 45 minutes!!!! Was down right frosty before I got everything put away until the next semi warm day.... Brrrrrr!
For the pond it was suggested to me to put fish in it during the summer to help keep the pond / pool clean. But we use a small plastic pool for the ducks.
I had ducks the first year I got chickens. If I were to get some again, I would gave them in their own coop. Males can seriously hurt a hen if he mounts her. So if you are wanting to free range with chickens I would only get female ducks especially if you only want a pair.
Is it possible to tell sex of ducklings in the tsc bins? I would like a pair or two females. I was thinking I might get 4 pullets and 2 ducks tomorrow. Mallards maybe.
Mallards fly good, I would not free range them right away. Ducks are extremely messy. They splash water around more than my toddlers do during a pool splashing fight. That said my Dh wanted more ducklings because he enjoys the eggs. The eggs are great in baking too. A real big difference in cornbread. Anytime you need to have water in the coop, it is time to get the ducks their own coop. If you plan to hatch your own duck eggs, a separate area for the male ducks is a good plan. Like Brad said the males can hurt a hen.
I'm so pieced I could scream!!!! Pretty much everyone knows I got Silkie eggs from Kab AND a friend whose hen died. Well last evening Kabs started to hatch, had three pipped by time I went t bed at 11:10, figured I'd be woken up by little peeping in a few hours. Well fat chance of that! Woke up at 4 by full bladder climbed outta bed to cold! Power went out sometime during the night!!! Bator was down to 91* grrrrrrrrrr of course no progress in bitties with it that cold!!!! Are they still going t hatch? Can they get that cold and still be ok??? I ran t kitchen tried to turn on to boil water (thinking to put a towel in there then ring it and put around bator) duh...electronic igniter! So scrambling to find fire place matches and power comes back on. Run into room crank up heater in bator get heat back to 99,5... And of course damage done so power stays on.... Bn watching for movement and listening for cheeps... Nuttin! So now what????
I would watch the temps really close since you adjusted them. This close to hatch my RIR do better getting a bit cold compared to getting hot. I understand wanting to get the bator back up to temps though. Cold can delay a hatch too but again being this close to hatching it might not be as big of a deal compared with eggs on day 6 in the bator.
I'm worried about them still, the ones that had pipped still haven't zipped... I wanted to be here for the hatch now looks like I won't be and the ones I promised Lilmizcareall aren't going to be hatched...let alone dry and ready to transport. It's ALWAYS something! I swear my life is a soap opera...lol without the se.....x !! Hehehe

I love my mutts.

Cricket

Raven

I think someone is figuring out how to lay an egg!

........................................................................................................................................................................
And this one, she has been watching too much 19 kids and counting I think. Her chicks are just now 5 weeks old and she has layed an egg nearly everyday for a week. She is an ambitious one, I'll give her that.

LL

Wow! Eggs so soon!! That's amazing!

I thought it was odd to say the least lol. She is a silly silkie. It's hard enough to get them to lay in general, let alone while brooding chicks.
Kab - those are some pretty mutts
Thank you. I can't believe they are blue. I knew Raven would be black since her mom is a minorca and it is dominate, but I had no idea my EE was a splash until the blue kids came. LOL Thats what splash ans silver lace throw I guess. I love it.

As I headed out the door for work this morning, I checked on my hatching eggs...........and I have my first hatchling of the year! Had the lid off the egg, but wasn't all the way out yet. It is either a Bresse or Bresse x Legbar (won't know for sure till it dries and I get a good look at it). I also had 4 other pips, including 3 Legbars!!!!!! Can't wait to get home tonight!

MinMin - my first pip was almost 24 hours until it started zipping. Holding out hope for your hatch!

Been crying all day. I never want to go through this again and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Wish I knew someone close, I would ask them to hatch them for me. but I don't so will just have to be happy with ALL the pic's I have and I do have allot.

I would love to but I don't have an incubator and right now with DH out of work no way we can even buy a cheep one.
Got to go out and sanitize the coop so I can start the 60 day thing, I figured it out and the chicks wont be held up from getting out long.

If you have time, my DH says that Radio shack or best buy might have a converter thing that you plug into the car lighter and the incubator plugs into the converter. He says they are not cheap but it could be saved as a backup for the next time the power goes out. As long as the car is running the converter should work great, when the car is off, the converter might drain the car battery.
