INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I
Well just got back from the vets my chickens have coryza.  The vet says they could have had it for a long time and it just now showed up, or they could have just got it, or the coons I had in my coop a few days ago could have carried it in.
It can not be cured, IF they make it through the long treatment, they will be carriers for the rest of their lives, cant sell them, cant bring in new chickens. Can be transferred from coop to coop by your shoes ect...  A friend of mine wants Big Man and Linus, the only 2 not showing signs, and she has a flock affected with this already. She has chosen to keep them, that's up to her, but I feel differently, I want more and I sell the eggs and ( no eggs are not affected unless you hatch them ) I cant do that with this illness, if people were to find out it would kill my sm business. and I cant watch them suffer, this is a painful thing to the birds.
I am going to give the roo's to my friend and keep my finger crossed for them and for her. They are pets to her and only pets, she don't even eat the eggs, she don't like eggs....  she just spoils them and treats them like kids.
I have chosen to cull  my whole flock. Not a thing I want to do but some of these hens I have a bond with and I refuse to see them go through this.
After we cull we will burn and sanitize and not put any poultry on the place for 60 days.
We have not decided what to do with all the chicks I have in the house, don't know how I could keep them in the house after they get bigger, don't have enough cages with enough room for them. So I may have them for sale soon, they are not infected, and they are getting vaccinated by the vet just as a percausen  ( cant spell ... just in case thing ) vet said it would be a waste of my money but doing it anyway.
Thank everyone for the support you have given me and letting my rant from time to time.

I am SOOOO sorry! For the first time in years I can honestly say I'm speechless! When the time comes that you are ready to get more birds and there are ANY breeds I have you are interested in you are welcome to eggs or chicks from me! Take care of yourself!

Is there a "get together" this summer?

I was told the group enjoys getting together and there's bn talk about possibly getting together at a camp ground (which sounds AMAZING) so the references I made in the Hortsman conversation was referring to that. I really think it should be planned now though so everyone has good long time to get time off arranged.

When I got home, I had a great surprise. Three more hatchlings joined the one that hatched this morning. Then I got to watch two more hatch right in front of me. It was fun cheering on the little guys.

Three of the hatchlings so far are legbars, and I think they are all boys. Hoping the last one is a girl. It has pipped, so we shall see. The others are all mixes.

Considering my previous two attempts at hatching were 1/7 both times, things are looking up!

I'm really sorry about your flock. That is such a heartbreaking situation. We recently decided to keep our flock after the confirmation of MD but we are not in business. I agree with the others in the group that it is courageous if you to have made that choice. Bio security used to be something that I thought was only a concern for show people. How naive I was! Now I have chicken shoes and clean everything as carefully as I can. Good luck to you and your baby chicks.
I agree, what a difficult decision. I will be on pins and needles for a while, Chick Rookie took some of my birds in early January so there is a slight chance my birds brought something in. I would have thought there would have been symptoms sooner (it has been 5 or 6 weeks), and I did keep some of the birds and they have not shown any symptoms, but I will be nervous for a while. Chick Rookie I am so sorry for what you are going through. I agree with Leahs Mom that you should incubate as many of the eggs you can so you keep a piece of this flock with you. :hugs I hope you find a way to keep your chicks and I will add my prayers that Big Man and Linus stay symptom free and enjoy their new home as pampered pets.
I'm really sorry for you too. This is stressful not knowing where it came from. Is it possible to get your soil or a chicken sampled at Purdue or chick rookies vet? It might alleviate your stress.
I love my mutts. :love Cricket
I remember thinking how pretty Peaches was last week. Her son is gorgeous!

You and your family need to escape your quarantine. Maybe you should spray your house with that chemical you're going to use on your coop to kill Marek's. :p At least you've been dealing with all the illness during crummy weather and will be healthy for spring. Only four more days until the end of February!!!! :)
I was thinking that rebuilding the house might be easier. Between the colds, stomach viruses, and sinus infections, my family has been sick for over a month. I haven't even met my twin nieces yet because of the self imposed quarantine and my house is truly a disaster. When moms get sick stuff just goes downhill fast! The good news is that I think we've turned the corner and I'm looking forward to better days. The raccoons around here are just lounging in the yard during the day. It kind of freaks me out with kids, dogs, and chickens in the yard. Like yours, my cat isn't bothered by them. I might need some 22 lessons if they get more brazen. I'm not sure how good I would be set that if I can't even dispatch a chicken to eat though. . (Sorry, M2H)

That would scare me if I saw raccoons like that during the day. I understand that they usually don't do that unless they have rabies.

I guess it is possible that they're just very hungry and aren't finding enough food at night. But I'd definitely be concerned about rabies if I saw them during the day.

oh wow! so sorry to hear this!

Oh no min min! I hope they hatch okay. You may have some shrink wrapped chicks. I have helped shrink wrapped by stsrting at the small end of the egg ang helping them zip. Wait though. They may be fine if you can get the humidity up. My broodies let their pipped kids slip out from under them sometimes and they still hatch okay.

Chickrookie i am do sorry to hear that. So sad for you. Hugs.

Raisenemright , went in last night and they said afternoon today. I talked to hubby and we may wait until our brisea gets here to get chicks. He hates heat lamps. Im not a huge fan either.

That is so unfortunate!!! I can't imagine going through this.

I'm glad you had it cultured to diagnose so you could make a decision based on what's really going on rather than just guessing.

I was just reading an overview of Coryza last night. It did say that it is not egg transmitted so if there are some of your current birds that you would want chicks from you could hatch some of them - as long as they aren't exposed to the adult carriers after hatch.

I can't imagine how hard it is to cull the whole flock and I hope I never find out. But I do applaud you for having the courage to make that decision as a part of responsible husbandry. Your willingness to take good care of your birds is an example to us all.

I want to thank each one of you all at once, to do each one at a time would take a long time and I just don't have the energy right now. So Thank You All

I love my mutts.

I think someone is figuring out how to lay an egg!

........................................................................................................................................................................
And this one, she has been watching too much 19 kids and counting I think. Her chicks are just now 5 weeks old and she has layed an egg nearly everyday for a week. She is an ambitious one, I'll give her that.
I love all your kids... very pretty, you guys will have to post pic's to the max for me for a while....

It's good that ChickCrazed is going to keep an eye on her flock, but as you said, germs and bacteria can be transferred many ways-- from people's shoes to visits from wild animals.

It's a good lesson for all of us about biosecurity-- and good for me to note because the two raccoons were back last night. They seem to be interested in the dropped squirrel corn even after I thought I had cleaned all that up. I'm going to investigate under the deck today. It's strange because my coop is just a few feet away, and it hasn't been disturbed. I turned on all the lights last night and put a radio on. DH installed a motion detecter light yesterday, but apparently it didn't deter the raccoons. Two nights ago, my cat was sitting on the deck a few feet away from a raccoon. My cats have always co-existed with raccoons and opossums. Anyway, I'm googling info on alarm systems. I'd like a way that I could be alerted if the coop is being disturbed. I wonder if there is an app for that.

Cluck Acres ~ Your new babies are really sweet.
kabhyper~ Forget Gus, I'm now in love with Cricket! lol He's an EE isn't he?

Btw, how do you get your silkies to pose? (stand still!) You photos look like professional ones taken of show birds.

I'm sure you know that jchny has lots of experience with ducks and geese and could advise you. I love her geese, but I don't know if they eat slugs. I hate slugs, too. Our deck is crawling with them the summer, ugh!

About dyeing chickens-- Didn't pbirdhaven say that some of the shows had chickens with dyed areas? Someone who shows birds mentioned that.

Here's an alternative idea to transform your dogs:
Thanks I think I made the right choice but it was so hard. Today really sucked, and the neighbors called animal control on us........ we thought we were out of sight.... oh well. Showed them the results from my vet and they went away!!!.

If you wanted to try to save some eggs, I'm sure that there is enough spare incubator capacity between the people on this thread to hatch out a few. I know I have some capacity, and would be willing to help out.
I would love to have some eggs hatched but like I said with DH off work and only getting 2/3's of his normal pay and me not getting my egg or goat milk money right now, I cant even drive to take the eggs to someone that would hatch them for me. I do thank you for the offer it means allot to me. Besides I have had them in the fridge .

This so sad to hear! I do think you made the right and vey brave choice. Insert hug symbol (On my phone again so can't use hug symbol)

Chick rookie - I feel so awful for you. I had the exact same thing happen this past fall. First time I had chickens and it all went belly up. My dad and I culled the flock together. I started out with new chicks a week ago, but I keep remembering my favorite girls, filling me around looking for treats. It will be tough for awhile.

I have learned so much about poultry and biosecurity from my chicken woes already. And this group of BYCer's is the best support group a chicken lover could ask for. Hugs, and if you ever need to vent, let it out. Having chickens, turkeys, ducks, etc is the most frustrating and rewarding thing, all at the same time!
What did you use to sanitize your goop? If you don't mind me asking.

Thank you, I don't know what you have, but I am looking for some chicks to be ready to go out at the end of the 60 days. I already have some that are in brooders now hat will be ready to go out in April, don't know what I will do with them, they cant go out till May.

Is everyone able to come to this get together? I would like to meet you guys if it was in the summer when DH was back to work, maybe it would be close to a horse camp and those of us with horses could do some trail ridding too? Just a thought, hope I didn't over steep.

I'm really sorry for you too. This is stressful not knowing where it came from. Is it possible to get your soil or a chicken sampled at Purdue or chick rookies vet? It might alleviate your stress.

Thanks, I am pretty sad about the hens Chick Rookie took, they were great girls and lived lives too short but this stuff happens. At the end of the day they are livestock and as such are outside of our watchful eye for most of their lives. We can only do the best we can do and a lot is outside of our control. After some more research I think it unlikely my flock is the source. I had had them all for at least 4 months (most longer) and not a single one had been symptomatic. According to my research If they were carriers the stress of moving homes would have likely set symptoms in motion quickly a long time ago. I will still be watching my flock carefully for a few months :(

Chick Rookie, I wish I had a Cochin hen so I could offer you chicks from Big Man's brother when the time comes! He has been "going steady" with my gorgeous Blue Laced Red Wyandotte so maybe I can hook you up with some weird looking crosses at some point lol. Of course as soon as I do get my Cochin hens I will be happy to give you hatching eggs or chicks. That is, of course, as long as my flock remains healthy...knock on wood...

When (not if) we have our second poultryfest. All are welcome and all ideas are welcome. It is looking like the hope is we can find some 'chicken-neutral' place that doesn't jeopardize anyone's flock.

Any suggestions on locations and activities are needed and no idea is unwelcome!
