SLW has a little feathering too.

They are just precious! I bet it is an EE, after all, EE are truly a mix. And they make the best chickens too! I love my GLW/BR crosses. Hens are super sweet, good layers. Roos are huge and friendly. Can't ask for more than that.

Quote: I bet they settle in quickly for you.

So in the busy evening we have had, I didn't check the silkies as early as I usually do. Well when I did Snow had bailed on her kids for the other box with the rest of the flock in it. She's done. So since it was kinda chilly in there, I put the babies in there too to sleep with the flock. I will probably put them back into their brooder during the day since they are still small. They are almost 6 weeks though, and she is laying eggs everyday, so they should be okay on their own. I snuck in and snapped a picture to see where everyone was sleeping. They seem to be okay.
Aww poor lil guys! But yep its time for them to be on their own. I would be keeping them in too. Mine are still in the garage (heated).
I only have 3 silkies out, but they are in the growout coop with steady temps around 35.

ok something went stupid with my computer... missing stuff that I put in the post but didnt show up so got to do it all over again
(just the stuff thats missing )
2 nd feather legged chick
same chick

I didn't have my glasses on yesterday, so I had the wrong chicks with feathered legs sorry, these are the only 2.
I have raised chicks before and got to say these chicks I think are going to be trouble. the SLW's are very aggressive, and the "EE's " STRESS to the max at the littlest things. I just walk up to the cage and look in at them and it's on!!!! God forbid I should ... fill a feeder, or water, or OMG I scoop poop!!!!!! done of which is easy to do with 3 little SLW's jumping on my hands and pecking me like I'm the best meal they will ever get!!!! When I'm looking at them "from the outside" of the cage 1 of them will actually jump at my face and hit the bars.!!!! Going to try and get DH to video it tomorrow. You wont believe it!!!
At first I thought it was cute but it happens all the time. Is this something wrong or is it play or what????

And I couldn't finish without my Pretty Woman. She is just so sweet !!!
love.gif

Hope she lives a very very long and happy life here with me.
Awww She is my fav! They have bonded with you, and assume you have goodies to eat, no worries.
They are happy to see you, thats why they charge the cage.
The wyandottes are very outgoing. Make sure you teach them early pecking you is not ok!
Red still bites me on occasion, I hand fed him and his girls when they were babies. Big mistake!
He doesn't mean it as an attack, just thinks I have treats, ugh.
Rings on your fingers are a huge attraction too!
My EEs are usually a little flighty as chicks. Some of my favorites have been total sweethearts too tho.

All my new additions! (Caution photo heavy!!!)
Diamond and Earl , King and Queen of the Bantam Coop !
Blinky the Black Sweedish and Armelia the Khaki.
5 White Crested Polish, 3 Silkies (2 partridge and 1 Blue), 2 "Red" Pullets, 4 (unknown partridge or chipmunk marked pullets) can u guess the breed I've no clue!
Wyandotte are chipmunk marked, and some EE are also.. hard to tell but thats my first thought.
So excited for you! Love those little white tophats

My hubby is being a helicopter dad to the ducklings. I told him they are his, and apparently I am handling them too much. HA! For someone who couldn't give two hoots about the chickens, he sure is attentive to those two ducks.

DH really took to my geese. His favorite is our oldest gander Gee. He also picks up our oldest scovy drake Stanley a lot, with a lot of "huffing" out of Stanley

Weird chicken news: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/...ml?&ir=Weird+News&ncid=tweetlnkushpmg00000025

After losing two chickens in a week - one BA and one EE - they are now secure in their new (used) coop. (We're pretty sure that the culprit is a neighbor's dog who seems to be frequently on the loose in the neighborhood.)

We had a recent run of raccoon and possum, since we had that warm up. One raccoon ripped into the roof and took one of my lavender hens.
sad.png

There was little left of her to even know what she was. I am just sick over it. She was very sweet and docile, and always on our laps.
Most of the south side of the roof is failing fast, and now its becoming dangerous for my birds. Found the bugger in the nest box sleeping.
We are now 4 less raccoon and 2 less possum per my traps and rifle, but that's not solving the problem!
Hoping for a thaw really soon. Moved my remaining 2 LO hens to the grow out coop until Spring lets us build and repair.
I put my 2 best roosters with them, and the remaining roos are staying with the egg flock. I am out there several times a night now, worried sick.

When I got back t the house three of th babies were racing around picking on each other just like siblings do... The other two never made it all the way out of their shells. They were zipped and ones head was stuck t the screen in the bator they were both dead. And none of the other eggs even pipped. We ended up with only three babies out of yours AND Kim's.

minmin~ My gosh! You had better slow down. I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter's health and wish her a speedy recovery. I'm glad your round trip from W.Va. to Indiana was safe and filled with poultry.

You and jchny are amazing women for coping with ill family members while caring for animals and others!

I have a few crummy, out of focus photos. I can identify with chick rookie whose new chicks are wild. My chicks typically act like I'm one who can't be trusted even though I wait on them hand and foot, clean up constantly, feed them, make sure they have toys and their favorite channel during TV time lol, and have let them have dust baths that have resulted in the room being coated with dirt. They have calmed down since I started feeding them live mealworms or small crickets from my hand each evening. I sit on the floor and lean down so I'm not so Godzilla-like, but they still find me untrustworthy.

So, all of that explanation describes why I have a few crummy photos. If anyone can possibly tell sexes, please speak up. I keep meaning to take photos during the day with natural light.

The Silkies (from bradselig) and English Orps (from Kiniska) are both six and a half weeks old. Last time I mentioned their age, I was off a week, but I re-checked my calendar. My blue orp, "The Rooster" refused to stand still to pose this evening.

Splash Silkie with mealworm.

Splash with one of the blues

The other blue that has a lighter back

Splash Eng. Orpington pullet trying to escape the camera
Your little splash is definitely a hen! But I am not good at guessing silkies yet...
They are all just too cute! You may have to have "quality time" with individuals...
Just get one out and spoil em rotten. Silkies come around fast when they get individual attention.

Quote: UGH, I wish it wasn't so far. I would love to have a few, the history behind them is pretty cool.
The eggs range in different shades all the way to BLACK!
I know hatcheries have them, but I don't want more than maybe a trio.
And would prefer to get some raised by a breeder, for sure!
We plan to go up for the first wolf lake swap, is that anywhere near you guys?

I am planning on hatching some BLRW and some Lavender Orpingtons. Anyone one have any of these breeds and any info would be helpful. I have buff orps and GLW and SLW didnt know if they differed much as far as temperment or egg production.

LOs are not real good layers, at least mine have not been. They are an English heritage breed so I understand they tend to be less of a layer.
Mine are about a year old now. They are very sweet, gentle birds, even the roosters are very social and friendly.
Really depends on what your wants or needs are. I love them for their disposition, and they are beautiful birds..but they are really not good for egg/meat production.
I Don't have BLRW, check with SallyinIndiana, or Bradselig, i think they both raise them.
My GLW are good egg layers and meat birds, but are also aggressive to other less dominant breeds. The young roosters are people aggressive too, until they mature.
Really depends on the breeding lines too, I had a very sweet SLW roo that never gave me a problem.

If Anyone is looking for some meat or a Rooster I am listing some on Craig's List.. One EE Rooster I bought as a day old chick last April I have decided to cull since it was supposed to be female, I have no use for an EE Roo.
I will also be listing 3 Roosters that I hatched from my flocks eggs on October 16th of last year under a broody hen. They are just now starting to act like roosters and it is time for them to go. They are a cross between Barred Rock Rooster and ISA Red hens. There is a small chance that the EE Rooster I listed first is the father of one of the 3 cockerels since it does not have the barring like the other two. Either way they are all nice and plump and ready to go..
I will list all 4 of them 8$ each or 30$ for all 4 on Craig's list tomorrow.. Does this seem fair and do you think they will sell quickly? I have never sold any chickens before and thought before I jumped right into listing them I would get some advise from you all..

Exciting! They usually hatch really well,
fl.gif
sending good hatching vibes!

I got the eggs from Brad so I am sure they will do great. That is if my incubator and my first time using an incubator goes well. I had to remove the automatic egg turner on day 5 because it was progressively getting louder and louder and the vibration it was causing seemed horrible to me.. I am now hand turning the eggs 3 times per day. The temp is steady at 99.5 in my Farm Innovators Circulated air incubator and the humidity is staying between 50 and 60. However, each time I hand turn the eggs, the temp drops about ten degrees for a few minutes and the humidity drops to about 45.. I hope this does not cause a huge problem. I wonder if I should have left the turner in there despite the noise just so the temp would remain steady without my disruption turning the eggs by hand..
