Ok people trust me I'm not crazy

I have a plan for my egg laying operation. I'm wanting to wind up around 30 layers. So that's why I'm picking up chicks everywhere! On the way to BigR I told my wife I won't pick up anymore chicks unless they are BLRW (I'm pretty sure no feed store gets them) or a leghorn breed! So my Son and Daughter run back to the chicks and my daughter comes back and says "guess what? They have White Leghorns!!" My wife looks at me and just shakes her head lol! We now have a white egg layer in the group or I should say 4 of them! And I couldn't resist these cute little grayish colored EE'ers. I am now done with chicks and I will finish out my layers with the hatching eggs this spring! Oh and yes they are all pullets!

I know this has nothing to do with chickens but I just have to share this with someone and you guys have been so great thought you might get excited with me, and scared and nervous all at the same time.
My Nubian doe is showing signs that she may kid in the next 24 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WooHoo I have been waiting for 5 mths., But now I'm scared If she has problems I wont know what to do???????

Yes this is my first time having kidding going on at my place.
No I have NO IDEAL what to do.

I need to get pictures up but all six little Easter Egger chicks are doing great. They are soooo loud. We all picked up on the other night and I got the loudest one! It screeeched! It was adorable but it was too loud for such a tiny cute body. Lol!

CCCCCCCChickens: lol, sorry for the confusion. I know they're ee's and unfortunately I know I can't show them. Someone should really work on a purely mutt show for mixed breeds! Lol may I be the first to volunteer? But my sister didn't understand that, she thought I would pick show birds and she would get to hold the rest.

I'm still not sure she fully understands the concept but she fell in love with the lightest one with a squiggle line on her head so I had to point out it wouldn't always look that way. Lol siblings so fun.

Hey I've got a quick question: I have a Little Giants Incubator with an automatic egg turner and I know what the temp should be but what is the correct humidity? You're suppose to add water to the bottom to regulate it but it doesn't say what it should be.

30% during incubation, 70% plus at lockdown has worked well for me.

Good afternoon, everyone. I thought I'd pop in for a small rant / warning here. This morning, one of my red sexlinks, Flicker, had a dusky comb. One we had that was similar in appearance to her died of some sort of heart problem, so my first thought was that she was having heart issues. After checking her over, though, I discovered the telltale swelling in her abdomen and eggy diarrhea. She is internally laying, which means her time left with me is limited.

Since it is chick season and many people are looking at chicks in their feed stores, I thought I would put this warning out there. Of course, my words are meaningless to anyone who plans to raise their hens a couple years and then butcher them. However, for those of you who keep your birds as pets, I highly recommend that you avoid getting red sexlink pullets. I have had 11 in my time with chickens, and 5 of them have died either from internal laying or other problems linked to their genetics, all at around 3 years of age. Soon to be 6, I guess. They have such great personalities, and they are so fun, but it's just heartbreaking to be where I am now, having to decide whether or not a beloved pet hen's quality of life has gone down enough that I should end her suffering. I'm not saying that all red sexlinks will succumb to this, and I have heard of some living long, happy lives, but where I am now, I don't see the 50-50 chance of them internally laying as good odds for longevity in them.

I hope that anyone who already has sexlinks has better luck with them than I have. I personally will never buy another. I'm hurting too much from losing them like this.




Anyway, I don't want to bring the thread down. I'm happy to see all the chick pictures and news of hatching. I was beginning to think people were talking to me with all the discussion about pipping going on!

I've got 78 days until I head out to pick my chicks up from Meyer's, and the chicken math is attacking with all these adorable baby pictures showing up! I just keep telling myself, I don't have enough room to add any more chicks to my order...

I hope my willpower lasts long enough!

Thanks!. Possibly (more likely summer). She is not laying yet. And I had someone PM a little while ago wanting eggs too. But I only have the pair. If she starts laying well and I can get some collected up. I hope to add to my stock. I will keep you in mind.

O and the only thing she will be bred to is another mottled cochin and he is the only male I have now so, it would be from the ones pictured.

I just realized today that my LF salmon favorolle has a deformed toe. She is walking on it, it curled under her foot. She is right around 2 years old so it is not correctable, but I feel kind of bad that I just realized it. Doesn't phase her though.

I wanted to say thanks to @jchny2000 for the quail eggs. We fried up most of them for the children who loved them. I did put 7 into the incubator. Any recommendations for hatching them. I'm on day 5. I'm thinking the lockdown is going to be my trouble spot. I have a still air so I need to come up with a way to get the tiny eggs up at the same height level as the larger heritage eggs going into lockdown the same day.

good luck on the hatch! They are little egg machines for sure. you could raise them higher with a sponge or layers of folded paper towel possibly. I have hatched them with regular chicks, just keep an eye out that they aren't trampled, but usually it goes fine. Fertility should be pretty good, I am 2 hens to 1 roo ratio. If you need more eggs just holler, and Brad raises them also.

Finally caught up! I think my BO might be molting she has been loosing feathers and hasn't laid in a while. Others still keep laying. I have 26 eggs in the fridge right now. We need to get eating lol.
Okay so we went to a 4-H project night last night (its a new thing that informs kids about a few different projects once a month) and went to the dairy foods judging. Just like napoleon dynatmite (anyone else ever watched that movie?) my brother and I were cracking up. I felt so sick after having all the those nasty dairy products lol.

Just t let everyone know, daughter is home and regaining her strength quickly! Results are good so far, but she's not able to eat solid food at all and the doctor said she has a severe case of Siliacs disease and is lactose intolerant. So she's allergic to ALL wheat products and dairy. Vegetables and fruit irritates the bowel and red meat blocks the bowel... So what's th poor girl supposed t eat?
