INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

ok cant find anything that gives me actual temps. so I made the billy a coat and blocked all the drafts with a tarp and put a whole bale of hay on the floor cause I don't have straw. It is going to get down to 15 tonight, you think they will be ok?

I think they will be fine. Think about the size difference between chickens and a baby goat. And chickens get along just fine. My goats have done pretty good with the winter, except for one of my older guys I had. He has his mom and brother to snuggle with and sounds like ton of bedding and no drafts.

Ok here is all the information I got for the NPIP Blood testing- I emailed them

-There is no minimum age limit on which you can become a tester. So if any of you have young kids that want to be more involved and aren't squimish, this is a perfect oppurtunity.

-In Indiana you can test your own flock once you are certified

-The classes are offered on two seperate dates
Saturday April 12, 2014 at Purdue University (lily hall) 8:30-noon
Thursday April 17, 2014 at Purdue SIPAC (Dubois, IN) 4:00-7:30

-cost $50 for class and an additional $22 if you want the starting kit

-You must pass a final exam at the end of the test

I'm probably going to go to the Saturday class. Would be fun to meet others on here there.

Sorry for reposting, but, I asked one time before and don't think I got any replies. (If anyone did reply and I missed it then I'm sorry) Does anyone know what this hens coloring would be called. She is a bantam cochin from TSC last year. I looked up "silver-penciled" and that doesn't quite look the same. Neither does "silver-laced"

Any ideas?
Would need a closer look/different angle, but looks like some type of lacing to me.

@RedRidge posted her pens on the Natural Chicken Keeping Thread... reposting here for your inspiration! (Hers are outside but this could work inside too.)
Those are great pens! I may have to look into building some like that for growout pens. That is the one area I am lacking right now.

I plan on going to the Saturday one too. It is closer. 2hrs 30mins. The other is almost 4 hrs. And it is easier to go a saturday

@wheezy50 I'd guess it is a sort of penciling, just not as fine as what you might be seeing. If you look at this page http://mrs.jaredyates.com/pages/chickens/chickens.html there is a SLW with a more chunky coloring instead of the delicate penciling or lacing that she should have. Anyone else have any thoughts?

is it a state certification only, being that it is offered in Indiana & i live in Michigan
I thought only people that lived in Indiana were allowed to go to this one to get certified. Each state has different guidelines too. In Michigan they might not let you test your own flock. I don't know. That is why I said it may very by state. Maybe try and send them an email or do some researching on google. That is how I found a person to email and got all of this information.Good luck

I know mine would... lol

the one I saw had hardware cloth on it too. I'm thinking they would eat it cause they peck any and everything.

they could still get at it through the squares. don't ya think?

Maybe so, I thinki t would depend on the size of the holes. I'm not sure I'd to put "chicken candy" in there after reading the posts, lol!!
Well I have not had a great day! After having no success catching the mink, my chicks seem to have been lost in the mail. They were shipped yesterday afternoon from Missouri, so they were not coming far. They were shipped Priority 1 day. Tracking information hasn't been updated since they were in TN last night around 10 pm. I am hoping they aren't lost somewhere, but the post office closes in 30 minutes and if they aren't there now there is a very good chance they will get caught in the impending snowstorm.

I was so excited to get them and now there is a good chance they won't even survive the trip.

Meanwhile the war is on with the mink. I modified the trap in the hopes of making it more alluring.
I really hope the babies are nice and healthy!
one of my two EE hens laid its first egg today, close to 4:30pm. It is more of a green blue than blue but still a big hit with the children. Now my egg carton has white (duck), light brown (Barred Rock & Production Red), medium brown (Red Stars), and a green somewhat blue egg. It is a nice variety compared to last year's all the same light brown eggs.
Congratulations. I love the mixed egg colors

HOLY MOLY! I called Rural King today and they have 30 different breeds this morning and 1100 chicks total. My head is spinning at the possibilities. I got the correct disinfectant for my brooder, the food mill will have new chick feed tomorrow and they have babies...I think I might be in business.

Hello, everyone! :D My babies have turned 10 months old today, so I have pictures!

My girl, Rangi the Ancona. Poor girl has lost half a wattle and all but one of her comb tips this winter.

The attention hog, Roha the Exchequer Leghorn:

Huka the Silver Lakenvelder, who was uncooperative because she was fussing over where to lay an egg. She was the last one to start laying out of these girls, but I don't know when she laid her first because she hid it.

Ihi the Golden Campine, who finally has regrown her fan-tail!:

My sassy Egyptian Fayoumi, Marama. Such an attitude! She's always got something to say about everything:

Whiri, my beautiful Light Brown Leghorn:

Margie the Silkie who is closer to 11 months old. She's just quit brooding for the fourth or fifth time.

Oh, and Mr. Po the black Cochin bantam. He's been such a good boy lately, finding treats for the girls and breaking up fights between some of them. :love I'm so proud!
