INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hello, everyone!

My babies have turned 10 months old today, so I have pictures!

My girl, Rangi the Ancona. Poor girl has lost half a wattle and all but one of her comb tips this winter.

The attention hog, Roha the Exchequer Leghorn:

Huka the Silver Lakenvelder, who was uncooperative because she was fussing over where to lay an egg. She was the last one to start laying out of these girls, but I don't know when she laid her first because she hid it.

Ihi the Golden Campine, who finally has regrown her fan-tail!:

My sassy Egyptian Fayoumi, Marama. Such an attitude! She's always got something to say about everything:

Whiri, my beautiful Light Brown Leghorn:

Margie the Silkie who is closer to 11 months old. She's just quit brooding for the fourth or fifth time.

Oh, and Mr. Po the black Cochin bantam. He's been such a good boy lately, finding treats for the girls and breaking up fights between some of them.

I'm so proud!

Thank you for sharing Pipd. Your babies sure did grow up nicely! I really love Whiri's coloring. Did she have any troubles with frostbite this year?

No, Whiri had no problems with frostbite. She actually quit laying for the worst of the weather and her comb shrank up as a result, so that probably helped to prevent it. I had two hens get frostbite this year, first time I'd ever had issues with it. I think it's because my coop addition flooded right before it got so cold, though. :/

So anyone know how to calm down a showgirl hen? She does NOT like other chickens! I had her in with a roo but got rid of that roo. So I was making up a new pen with the showgirl, 2 silkie pullets, 1 showgirl pullet and a roo. She was was attacking the rooster as if she was another roo! Flogging and everything! I went out to take care of the other chickens outside and I find one silkie pullet just sitting in the middle of the pen with her head down not moving. I pull her out and she is practically our if it. Just sat there. I looked through her crest and sure enough, her scalp was bloody. The pullet did not live through the night! The other showgirl is so submissive anyway I pulled her out before she could get injured.

I'm not sure what to do with her. So far she has settled it out the roo, but I'd rather not have just pen for the pair. I guess I need to hatch out as many chicks from them and then cull her. I've never had to deal with such a mean hen!

I don't know how to calm her down, you likely won't be able to change her attitude unless one day she just comes out of it on her own. But I honestly wouldn't breed her with her aggression problem. Usually you see people culling cockerels for aggression and long time breeder suggest not to bred an over aggressive rooster. I would imagiene they would do the same with a hen (not breed her and cull her), though you don't ever really hear of having that problem with a hen

Sorry about the hen situation Brad.
Well my power stayed on and I just put 9 out of 14 eggs on lock down! 5 did not make it. One egg was about a 3" long embryo (slight smell to the egg) and one was about pea size, the last 3 I knew from candling they were glow in the dark duds. This is a batch that was staggered in the same bator at 65 percent humidity for their first five days. And they also were shipped eggs! So 64% isn't to bad I don't think, but I am new (2nd hatching) to incubating. Hopefully in a few days I will have 4 BPR's and 5 RIR's running around!

Thankfully the chicks from her (who the oldest are around 6months old) haven't shown any type of aggression, but i have to agree with you that I will likely cull her.

I think they will be fine. Think about the size difference between chickens and a baby goat. And chickens get along just fine. My goats have done pretty good with the winter, except for one of my older guys I had. He has his mom and brother to snuggle with and sounds like ton of bedding and no drafts.
ok cool thanks but mom rejected the first born, so he is in the house, so its only mom and #2 son. #1 son was all tangled up and had some problems arriving.
